Commander Etta Jones, officer in charge of the Norfolk, Virginia-based Ponce, was sacked for not properly investigating sailors involved in the humiliating rituals, the Navy said.
Commander Jones also failed to properly handle a 9mm handgun during a security alert, which endangered some of her crew, the Navy said.
Lieutenant Commander Kurt Boenisch, the ship's executive officer, was also sacked, after he failed to provide support to the command and commanding officer, according to the Navy.
The sackings come as the the amphibious transport dock Ponce - pronounced 'ponsay' - is deployed in the Mediterranean, after recently taking part in a mission in Libya.
As he removed the two officers from their posts, Vice Admiral Harry Harris said: 'When leadership fails in setting a proper example or upholding proper standards on his or her ship, they fail to serve our sailors, our Navy and, ultimately, our nation.'
Captain Brad Skillman, deputy commander of Amphibious Squadron 4, has taken command of the Ponce, which is due home in about two months to be decommissioned.
Commander Jones is the eighth U.S. Navy commanding officer relieved so far this year, according to navytimes.com

Quite obvious they're picking CO’s for ships based on something other than merit.
I don't think a sheelback ceremony is what this is. Back in the late 70s and 80’s when I was in, there was truly humiliating initiations on my ship that just doesn't belong in any mans Navy. And nobody was punished, because victims were afraid to talk. Where talking young terrified sailors being held face down, having their pants pulled down and objects such as broom handles, grease guns hoses, whatever put you know where.
I was going to make a career of the Navy, but the scum that joined (mostly during the Carter years) made me change career paths. It was not my Dad's Navy.
The most treasured document ever owned by my late father-in-law was his shellback card. Carried with him from WWII until his a passing a couple of years ago.
Ya’ think? Bwahahahaha ....
Women commanding men in combat will always end in failure. 10,000 years of human history sacrificed on the altars of political correctness.
It is the United States Navys custom for LPDs to be named after cities that take their names from explorers and developers of their countries.
Rape is not a tradition of our military. Anyone engaging in sexual assault should be tossed overboard with a bag of chum attached to their ass.
That is sick to the nth degree. Every one who did these things should have been reported and given a dishonorable discharge.
barry´s navy
(LOL)
Hi Naps...Hope your retirement is going WELL! :)
I wanted to ask your opinion on something (forgetting this commanders “looks”) regarding the various dismissals by the “Navy”.
I haven’t researched it and have only briefly read headlines etc but is it possible that the brass being dismissed is because they are ‘not’ PC and/or have an aversion to the direction the Navy/military is going? That is they are using anything (trumped up or otherwise) to get rid of the old mindset. Or is all of this legit? Just curious what you think...
i never heard of such a thing....the worst we did was gamble on if the new guys would make it to the head before barfing all over the deck....
Try telling that to the cabin boy!
For British speakers the name is LOL. And “Ponsay” is ROFLMAO.
Yep! Being force-fed dog food, and being manacled and rolled in dog$hit sounds like a swell idea. Thank God for the Army!
