I don't think a sheelback ceremony is what this is. Back in the late 70s and 80’s when I was in, there was truly humiliating initiations on my ship that just doesn't belong in any mans Navy. And nobody was punished, because victims were afraid to talk. Where talking young terrified sailors being held face down, having their pants pulled down and objects such as broom handles, grease guns hoses, whatever put you know where.
I was going to make a career of the Navy, but the scum that joined (mostly during the Carter years) made me change career paths. It was not my Dad's Navy.
Rape is not a tradition of our military. Anyone engaging in sexual assault should be tossed overboard with a bag of chum attached to their ass.
That is sick to the nth degree. Every one who did these things should have been reported and given a dishonorable discharge.
barry´s navy
i never heard of such a thing....the worst we did was gamble on if the new guys would make it to the head before barfing all over the deck....

You were on some kind of messed up bucket.
I was on two different ships from 77-81. I even went through an equator crossing, and never saw anything like what you speak of. I don’t doubt it happened, but I’m telling you it wasn’t everywhere.
