If you are “fixing” it, then why would the reverend have made any comment at all.
Methinks you are unfairly misquoting the reverend, who seems to have been the one who remembered their purpose there.
You're reading way too much into that.
My fix was an interpretation by me of the real reason many were in the church to begin with..
