The US pastor whose burning of a Koran sparked deadly violence in Afghanistan was briefly jailed in a heavily Islamic suburb on Friday after a court banned his protest outside a mosque.
A local judge jailed Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida and his associate Wayne Sapp after a court found their planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, could lead to violence.
During his court appearance, Pastor Jones argued that the Koran "promotes terrorist activities around the world."
He also insisted that his right to protest against Islam was protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
"The First Amendment does us no good if it confines us to saying what is popular," he pointed out.
But Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad testified that his department had received information about serious threats made against Pastor Jones from local residents, and argued that his protest could lead to violence if allowed.
Prosecutor Robert Moran argued that the protest had nothing to do with the First Amendment and at stake were security and peace in the community.
The jury sided with the prosecution and Judge Mark Somers set bond at the symbolic amount of $1 each for the two pastors, which they initially refused to pay.
Following their refusal, both were escorted to a local jail. But local media reported both men changed their minds after spending about an hour behind bars and posted the $1 bond.
Under the judge's ruling, both Pastor Jones and Mr Sapp are now prohibited by the court from going to the mosque for three years.
But Pastor Jones was quoted by The Detroit Free Press as saying the two "will come back next week" to try to organise a new protest.

Can't use that logic against Westboro Baptist Church's desecration of US soldiers funerals, but you can use it against offending Moslems.
Interesting.
I wonder how the New Black Panther Party rally outside of downtown PHilly Police Department will turn out - or any other rally they are going to stage
Behold the pale horse.
When did we stop allowing free speech in America?
Mr. Jones has a right to protest any damn place he pleases.
So what if a few people get angry.
Bingo ~ ditto.
Hussein’s America: what we’re seeing is the culmination of a perversion of the First Amendment, destroyed slowly over the years.
Larry Flynt’s bashing of Jerry Falwell? Protected speech.
Robert Mappelthorpe’s photo of man with bullwhip sticking out his ass? Protected speech.
Jesus submerged in urine? Protected speech.
Virgin Mary covered in elephant dung? Protected speech.
Code Pink/anti-war protestors calling for Bush’s death? Protected speech.
Someone not happy with Islamic radicals? UNPROTECTED SPEECH!
Wow! Time to sue.
Jailing a guy for INTENT to speak in public?
The thought police are now on duty. Sure looks like this horse is out of the barn.
It’s okay to prevent Mr. Jones and his associate from protesting a mosque because it might incite violence.....but it’s not okay to ban idiot protestors from military funerals, because of their right to free speech. Got it.
We’ve turned into Freaking Communist China.
Screw these cockroach moslems.
Give em an inch, they take your whole country.
Ask Holland, ask the UK.
This pastor hasn’t done ANYTHING WRONG, and so far they’ve thrown him in jail, demanded $1 who-knows-why, told him he can’t have free speech, then ordered him to stay away from the mosque for 3 years?
This is absurd. The USA will never swallow “sharia law,” no matter how Oqaeda tries to ram it down our throats.
Let the moslem cockroaches spend another 1400 years wrecking the middle east, and leave us alone.
This is outrageous.
Very very very bad news for all of us.
I do not care for Mr. Jones or his message but he has an ironclad right to protest whatever he wants, where ever he wants (on public property).
This does not bode well for any of us.
First they came for the Koran burners....
Did they imprison the so-called artist who put the crucifix in urine? Did they imprison Bill Ayers for burning the American flag?
This is like throwing people in prison b/c tomorrow “the sky might be blue.”
When are psychotic mass-murdering MOSLEMS........ NOT violent.... or NOT threatening violence?
I’m glad this deranged sack of crap is out of my state.
We all know a significant percentage of muzzies like killin’ in a bloodsport around the world for as many centuries as this cult is old, to this day.
Nothing good can come from this. He does not represent today’s Christianity and does a disservice to all those of any (almost) faith.
He is scum. A provocateur.
We all understand the 1st Amendment and don’t need this asshole out there to remind us, JMO.
And this jackass is coming back week to stir up trouble.
He’s no less a scumbag than the Westboro scums.
It’s provocative and unnecessary serving no purpose.
One call from the Mohammedan congressman? What state/city is he in?
yitbos
We had “Draw Mohammed” Day.
Did we have “Burn the koran” Day?
If not, it’s time to.
Lemme see...............I can burn a flag and be protected and venerated by the media, politicians, police and courts....but, I burn a shytpaper koran and I’m arrested???
I see...........
Is this unlawful imprisonment?
