"The entertainment and electronics industries keep trying to push 3D on consumers, even though a lot of smart people have caught on to the fact that it is a scam and not innovation as the industry would like you to believe. From the article: 'This is a bad experiment that the industry is forcing consumers to subsidize. And since they cant create a better product, theyve simply latched on to 3D as a marketing ploy that the entertainment and electronics industries can use to trick people into thinking that they are getting a superior experience. Its only working because just enough people are falling for the scam to keep it alive.'"
That had to put the kibosh on getting up to get a snack!
Hmmmm. I actually paid about $1,440 for my XBR9 right after Thanksgiving 2009. I keep seeing ~$1,000 LED LCDs.
How has your XBR4 performed?
And I bought just over a year ago a Sony KDL-40EX500 for US$798 (you can get a new one for around US$735-US$750 currently). It’s still considered one of the best 40” CCFL-backlit LCD flat panels out there even now (it’s still in full production—Sony still makes it for people who don’t want Internet apps like you get with the KDL-40EX520).
I tried to watch ‘Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein in 3 D’ ages ago in a grotty little Art House theater.
Gave up on the entire concept less than a half hour into the film and haven’t considered the idea of 3D since.
Jack.
Excellent TV. No problems at all.
I suspect it’s like anything else. There are a dozen implementations out there, and some work better than others. Our Panasonic plasma setup gives an awesome 3D effect with vivid colors, excellent contrast and no headaches— not even for my wife, who is very prone to motion sickness, etc. “Tron Legacy” was flippin’ awesome in 3D on that thing!
Try before you buy, is the word, and try different manufacturers’ units before making up your mind.
In our case, we got our plasma for a really good price at Costco. Basically we paid no “3D premium” at all. And of course it plays regular broadcast and DVDs beautifully. I’m really glad we got it.
