(AP) BENGHAZI, Libya - U.S. Sen. John McCain, one of the strongest proponents in Congress of the American military intervention in Libya, said Friday that Libyan rebels fighting Moammar Gadhafis troops are his heroes.
(snip)
When Obama acted with limited congressional consultation, McCain - who was the 2008 Republican presidential contender running against Obama - defended the president, saying he couldnt wait for Congress to take even a few days to debate the use of force. If he had, "there would have been nothing left to save in Benghazi," the rebels de-facto capital.

The voters in Arizona will re-elect him to the Senate. After this term runs out.
As I posted a couple of times yesterday, Germany's Spiegel Online ran this story early yesterday.
They give more background on McCain's quote than I've seen in the links on FR.
McCain was talking to reporters outside the hotel when a reporter asked him point blank if he was concerned that al-Qaeda was known to be among the rebels. McCain's answer was "Why should it? They (the rebels) are my heroes".
Spiegel hasn't pulled that quote from their story.
I know Spiegel has reporters on the ground there because they have published some interesting reports from inside the rebel circle of operation.
I'm guessing the quote is accurate, so McCain doesn't care if we're helping al-Qaeda elements in Libya.
Since the 'rebels are my heroes' quote was linked to the question about al-Qaeda, I'm also wondering why I haven't seen that mentioned in US media reports. Maybe it has somewhere, so if someone has seen it let me know.
Ugh.
