Americans hold dim view of U.S. economic outlook: (New York Times/CBS News) poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Americans are more pessimistic about the U.S. economic outlook than they have been since the start of the Obama administration and most believe the United States is on the wrong track, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll released on Thursday.

The number of Americans who think the economy is getting worse jumped 13 percentage points in just one month, to 39 percent, the poll suggested.

Just 23 percent said they thought the economy was improving, down 3 percentage points from the previous month.

Seventy percent of respondents said the country was heading in the wrong direction and most think neither President Barack Obama nor Congressional Republicans share their priorities for the country, the poll showed.

The dour mood is dragging down performance ratings for President Barack Obama and both parties in Congress with the 2012 election season already underway, the poll found.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy, while 75 percent said they disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job.

While Washington is consumed with debate over deficit-reduction proposals, Americans seemed uncertain about the impact of cutting the deficit on the U.S. economy.

Some 29 percent of those polled said cutting the deficit would create more jobs, while 29 percent said deficit-cutting would cost jobs and 27 percent said it would have no effect on the employment outlook.

The poll found considerable support for Obama's proposal to raise taxes on the wealthy -- 72 percent of respondents approved of that idea as a way to address the deficit.

.....but I can only attribute that to the fact that everyone thinks this is temporary.

And we know where most of the “multitude of fools” were educated...public schools.

Exactly. It’s all going as planned.

And yet most conservatives will still send their own children to public school...confusing...

Some people have no real choice but to send them to public schools. Ours were home schooled.

Well put; I never said it was temporary. The BELIEF that it is keeps people going.

“When it sinks in, we’ll see see some ugly things.”

I agree; the US has been reluctant to ever tell its underclass that they have no role in the future of this country - how they could ever tell much of the middle class the same thing is beyond me.

I would agree that some people would have to make HUGE sacrifices to not send their children to public school but a very large majority send their children simply because it is easier on them. If the system would collapse, I would hope that the churches would step up and assist those that would truly need the help.

What do you mean? The US government has had to tell people their roll and status in society?

No; for years they have been maintaining the illusion that our permanent underclass, with little education and limited language skills, has some kind of future here (when they obviously don’t). Now they’ll have to maintain the same illusion with people who do have an education and language skills that their future is not just as dim (when it apparently is). The government has been MASKING the role & status (or lack thereof).

Thanks for the clarification. You’re right. Make ‘em think they’re happy, prosperous and free.

I just don’t think it will be possible to maintain the facade much longer; as more people realize this is a long-term, if not permanent, situation, something has to give.

This is one of the main reasons I don’t believe Obama has a chance at re-election, and why I don’t think the Dem donors and other politicians on the ticket with him will even let him be the 2012 candidate. Despite all of their public comments to the contrary, they know they will take a real beating (2009 & 2010 were a warning to them as to the real popularity of The Sultan and his program).

How Obama plans to "cure" the middle class standard of living problem:

grab the hardworking people by the bootheels, turn upside down and shake

then give all the money that falls from the money tree to foriegn entities and welfare bums

Until we do the following to the economy:

1. MASSIVELY overhaul our national taxation system to make it more business-friendly.

2. Cut the size of government at all levels (Federal, state and local) by at minimum 30%.

3. Aggressively overhaul our financial system to discourage runaway futures speculation, high-risk investments, and to encourage corporate IPO's.

4. Phase out the Federal Reserve Note fiat currency and replace it with a new US dollar valued by a combination of gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper and nickel (the most common metals used in coins and bullion blocks for monetary exchange).

The world's economy will continue to go downhill. And there is now worry we will have a perfect repeat of the 1930's: economic depression, increased political extremism and eventually world war as countries fight over every major resource.
