As previously reported, Senate Bill 626 was headed to the Senate Appropriations Committee. The NRA has learned that SB 626 has been not referred to the Senate Appropriations committee, but kept on the active Senate Calendar and could be voted in the Senate as earlier as next week. Please call your state Senator today to OPPOSE SB 626 and protect Pennsylvania tradition.
Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed a bill supported by “animal rights” extremists and state Senator Patrick Browne (R-16) is again leading the charge on this legislation. Simply put, Senate Bill 626 would criminalize and ban organized bird shoots in Pennsylvania.
Organized bird shooting is a traditional, international shooting sport widely practiced in over thirty-five states across the nation not just in Pennsylvania as opponents falsely claim. For over a century, shoots have been held in Pennsylvania by law-abiding, ethical shooting enthusiasts, hunters, and sportsmen who would not tolerate an activity that would constitute cruelty to animals.
Radical national "animal rights" groups, led by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), have organized and funded efforts in Pennsylvania and around the country to ban this longstanding traditional shooting sport. Make no mistake; this isn't just about banning organized bird shoots, but banning all hunting species by species. Here are a few examples of HSUS activities:
* Led a 2006 ballot campaign to ban dove hunting in Michigan (contributing $1.6 million to the effort) * Funded efforts ballot initiative in 2004 to ban traditional bear hunting in Maine * Successfully lobbied for the cancellation of the 2006 New Jersey black bear hunt * Opposes hunting on National Wildlife Refuges * Opposes state pheasant stocking programs in Pennsylvania and across the country

Now I prefer to eat what I kill, except insects, but if you don't learn to hunt and fish for fun, you may not know how to do it when your survival depends on those skills.
And it's not like any carcass will go to waste. Nature takes care of that.
Pigeon shoots ain’t hunting.
Our local woman veterinarian has a poster in her office exposing HSUS as a shill organization that spends less than 1% on animals, the rest on high dollar salaries and high living.
I agree with you in principle, but the left is using this as a wedge issue to ban all hunting. It's how they always operate.
When I was born, seatbelts in cars were optional equipment.
When I was a few years old, car makers were required to install them.
Not too long after that, failure to wear a seatbelt became a secondary offense you could be charged with if pulled over for speeding, reckless driving, etc.
Before long, failure to wear a seatbelt became a primary offense and you could be pulled over and cited merely because a police officer thought he saw you driving without one.
In recent years, your and my tax dollars have gone to ad campaigns which use our own money to threaten us about what's going to happen if we drive without a seatbelt. Additional tax dollars fund overtime police patrols to specifically target seatbelt compliance.
Do you seriously think that if 'canned hunts' are banned, the anti-hunters will be content to stop there? I would much rather 'real hunters' mock these, and let the free market eventually elimate them altogether.
I am a Pro-2A guy to the bone.
Think everyone should be able to own a machine gun if they want to, and Constitutional Carry is the right of every citizen.
That being said, some of the “hunts” in PA are barbaric and are in no way sporting.
The NRA should be working on the repeal of GCA68, not in continuing cruel traditions which have no justification.
IMO, things like this show that the NRA has lost its way.
I am a PA resident and I strongly support this bill. I have contacted my state rep and state senator requesting that they end the barbaric tradition of live pigeon shoots in PA. Innocent birds are drugged and then shot into the sky as projectiles where hunters shoot them down. Anything not dead by gunfire is strangled. Children collect the carcasses in baskets. This barbaric practice is an insult to reputable hunters. I support the 2nd amendment and the right of sportsmen to hunt but this horror is not hunting.
No, but it’s getting rid of pigeons.

Why is it more barbaric to shoot pigeons for target practice than it is to
1. Poison them?
2. Sic a falcon or other bird of prey on them?
3. Let your cat stalk them?
4. Refrain from any control hence creating health hazards?
Look into it a bit more. It is barbaric.
If muslims were doing it, I am sure we would hear from people about it on this very site.
