Polls Paint Bleak Re-Election Picture
Commentary Magazine ^ | April 20, 2011 | by Peter Wehner

Two recent polls spell trouble for President Obama. A Washington Post-ABC News poll, whose sample was skewed toward Democrats by a ridiculous 10-point margin (32 v. 22 percent, with Independents at 41 percent), showed the president’s approval rating to a near record low, with 47 percent approving the job he’s doing, down 7 points since January. Fully half of Americans disapprove of his job performance, with 37 percent saying they “strongly disapprove,” nearly matching the worst level of his presidency. Among independents, 55 percent disapprove of the job Obama is doing.

Almost six in 10 Americans (57 percent) disapprove of the job the president is doing dealing with the economy, tying the highest negative rating of his presidency. Forty-four percent believe the economy is getting worse while only 28 percent say it’s getting better. And for Obama, here’s the most ominous finding of all: 45 percent say they definitely will not vote for him for re-election while only 28 percent say they definitely will.

In a McClatchy-Marist poll, which gave Democrats an 8-point sampling advantage, 44 percent of registered voters approve of how the president is doing in office compared with 49 percent  who disapprove. Sixty-one percent of registered voters disapprove of how the president is handling the federal budget deficit while only 34 percent approve. Among independent voters, more than two-thirds — 68 percent — are unhappy with Obama on the deficit. And by a margin of 64 percent v. 31 percent, Americans think the nation is moving in the wrong direction, the largest since November 2007.

The polling data from these surveys and others paint a picture of a nation that is deeply uneasy, pessimistic about the future, and increasingly unhappy with the performance of the president. It’s true enough that the 2012 election is a long way away. The pendulum will swing back and forth many times between now and then. Still, we’re now one-third of the way through Obama’s third year as president – and almost every political indicator for him is getting worse. Much more problematic for Obama, the economy remains fragile and the recovery anemic, with growing doubts about our creditworthiness and commodity inflation increasing (retail prices for a gallon of regular-grade gasoline will average $3.86 from April through September, up from $2.76 for the comparable period last year).

What this means is that Obama won’t run primarily on his record or his plans for the future; his political strategy is to assault Republicans in as agreeable a manner as possible. He’s going to run a campaign based on fear, employing an avalanche of fraudulent arguments, all the while portraying himself as reasonable and mature, the only adult in a political room full of children.

This approach is not only dishonest; it’s stale. The nation is increasingly weary of Obama. At this stage, then, the president is weak and getting weaker. The challenge for Republicans is to produce a nominee who is serious, reassuring, and accomplished. If they do, they have a great chance of winning the White House in 2012.

Yet, other polls show just about every GOP contender polling down 10 points or more against him, with only Huckabee even coming close.

MSM will not choose our nominee. We will win. Dems will stay home. Mark my words.

I disagree.

MSM and libs crossing over in droves in open primaries will choose our nominee (Mitt Romney). We will lose. Conservatives will stay home (because we are sick of the establishment GOP just slowing the trend towards socialism and not fighting to reverse it). Mark my words.

“Nail. Meet coffin.”

I find this metaphor surprisingly cheerful!

I am sure that is the game plan. We may have a 1980 style upset though.

Obama isn't the problem. The mentality that elected Obama is the problem. If McCain was president now, how much better off would we be? And you can bet the country club will give us another McCain. When Lucy pulls the football this time, I won't be on the field.

“MSM and libs crossing over in droves in open primaries will choose our nominee (Mitt Romney).”

The solution to this is quite simple: CLOSE THE FREAKING PRIMARIES!

And the cited poll was of “adults,” not likely voters, not even registered voters.

his re-election plan involves the GOP nominating another spineless squish and Donald Trump going third-party so that he’ll be able to squeak back in on a plurality under 40%

They’ve had four years. Not even a hint of a peep of a move in that direction.

Yesterday on Neil Cavuto’s Fox show Ben Stein was a guest pushing a new book. Stein is a staunch pro-lifer and is pro-military but otherwise he’s a quirky observer of the current scene. He said he was 90% sure that Obama would be re-elected. Keeping Hollywood cred alive or does he believe this?

In almost all of the National Polls where the average nonpolitical American voters are surveyed, Obama still beats all of the current candidates. Huckabee is the only potential candidate who holds a possible threat to Obama.

Strong Conservatives are down by double digits. Our biggest problem is, that 47% of the public pay little to no taxes and rely on Government to give them something. It will be difficult to overcome this Socialism that has taken such a strangle hold on the Country.

Unless someone like Trump can expose Barry for the fraud he is, here is the reality.

Obama’s reelection is really a very, very simple math problem. Consider the following:

1) Blacks will vote for Obama blindly. Period. Doesn’t matter what he does. It’s a race thing. He’s one of us,

2) College educated women will vote for Obama. Though they will be offended by this, they swoon at his oratory. It’s really not more complex than that,

3) Liberals will vote for Obama. He is their great hope,

4) Democrats will vote for Obama. He is the leader of their party and his coattails will carry them to victory nationwide,

5) Hispanics will vote for Obama. He is the path to citizenship for those who are illegal and Hispanic leaders recognize the political clout they carry in the Democratic Party,

6) Union members will vote overwhelmingly for Obama. He is their key to money and power in business, state and local politics,

7) Big Business will support Obama. They already have. He has almost $1 Billion dollars in his reelection purse gained largely from his connections with Big Business and is gaining more everyday. Big Business loves Obama because he gives them access to taxpayer money so long as they support his social and political agenda,

8) The media love him. They may attack the people who work for him, but they love him. After all, to not love him would be racist,

9) Most other minorities and special interest groups will vote for him. Oddly, the overwhelming majority of Jews and Muslims will support him because they won’t vote Republican. American Indians will support him. Obviously homosexuals tend to vote Democratic.

10) Approximately half of independents will vote for Obama. And he doesn’t need anywhere near that number because he has all of the groups previously mentioned. The President will win an overwhelming victory in 2012.

11) The overwhelming majority of college students will vote for Obama.

The only chance the Pubies have is to select Rubio for the number 2 spot to try to get the Hispanic vote. He should give every campaign speech in Spanish. If Romney couldn’t beat McLame for the 2008 nomination how can he possibly beat Barry.

I believe BIG BUSINESS is moving away from Barry and I even see some Hollywoodites doing the same... Have you seen Fallon or Stewart unloading on the guy of late! Indies are now against him by a good margin..... I do believe we need to nominate a new candidate... I’m not a Mitt hater but it’s just putting a figure up there wh won’t get a big bump from where he sits now unless Barry’s life collapses.... Rubio is a great VP choice.... really it puts fear in the Dimwit campaign.... We need the newness and energy of a Christie... the two ladies have that energy but are easy targets for the MSM..... it’s a long way till 11/12 .....

Not happening. He has lost much of the independent votes he received in 2008 and will not get them back. Most of these people were blind to what he is all about in '08, but they are now well aware. For the most part, it was independents that got him elected last time, and it is likely this group that will send him home IF a credible candidate from the GOP group can be found. In general, the bloom is off the rose. Obama will have to work to win this election, he will not be able to coast.
