Not the only veto she issued tonight, either. She also rejected a bill that would have allowed people to carry guns on state college campuses on grounds that it was poorly written. Not a total surprise given the political climate in the state after Gabby Giffordss shooting, but a mild surprise given the grassroots conservative cred Brewer built for herself by championing Arizonas immigration law.
This ones a genuine surprise, though.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed a bill to require President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove their U.S. citizenship before their names can appear on the states ballot
I do not support designating one person [i.e. the secretary of state] as the gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate, which could lead to arbitrary or politically motivated decisions, said Brewer, who was secretary of state until she became governor in 2009.
In addition, I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for president of the greatest and most powerful nation on Earth to submit their early baptismal circumcision certificates among other records to the Arizona secretary of state, she said. This is a bridge too far.
Im guessing theres some local political angle that explains this, but I cant figure out what it is and some furious googling reveals nothing. Any Arizonans willing and able to explain? She just started her new term so electoral politics is immaterial. Is there some core agenda item that she needs Democratic help to pass? Or is she trying to build goodwill with Obama for better cooperation on immigration? Or, just maybe, did she genuinely believe that the bill was stupid and embarrassing to Arizona? All theories welcome.
Not so quick to slam, any one checked out this legislation, it could well be junk construct. Gotten to, not, Jan is a pretty sharp kid.
Rabin
Politics is dirty - RAT politics is TRASH!!!
This may sound like a little bit of stretch, but here it goes.
Maybe the thinking among those republicans is that Obama is very defeatable. If he is knocked out of the race we may have Hillary to deal with come Nov. 2012 and a re energized Democrat party. With the Republicans in control of the House Obama is handicapped as to what he can do so lets wait him out.
I know. In this day and age how difficult would be to get a certified birth certificate. Or at least make the law ambiguous enough to allow the Sec. of State to be able to determine if the “source’ of information is adequate.
I’m thinking the same thing. It seems it would only need a small modification to allow for a panel to approve or deny versus a single person.
I do wonder why the dems overwhelmingly supported it unless they salivated at the idea of a future Dem SoS abusing this privilege.
Disappointing but if only ONE state adopts such a law the jig is up for Urkel.
I’m not from AZ, but from what I understand, her veto was based on the language of the bill.
The one thing we don’t need is another bill passed that is labeled one thing, but does another.
Like the ‘internet neutrality’ bill.
The devil is in the details.
Sounds like it was a pretty worthless bill anyway. It allowed several other forms of easily faked “proof”.
If in committee or panel, I think it should somehow still be voted on by the state legislature at the time because it’s a pretty big deal: calling an act or a candidate unqualified constitutionally. Almost certain to be challenged by the Feds, so the state should be solid in its resolution I think.
Right! And, a boy is circumsized some 8 days after he is born. This is no proof that he was born where he was circumsized. Ditto for baptisms.
Also think she has been spoken to. She has been at the White House a few times.
I wonder if she will sign the birth certificate bill that has been passed by the AZ legislature. I have my doubts. McCain is probably counseling against it.
That’s what I figured. The bill is garbage that basically ignores the Constitutional requirement to be NBC and essentially creates a bunch more loopholes out of easily forged documents.
Jan is as dumb as a sack of rocks. McCain is the puppeteer.
Trump is going to have something to say about this.
Pop some corn.
Very,very disappointed with Gov. Brewer.
The bill uses the same language and document requirements as someone who applies for a US passport. This is not a flawed bill. Obama would have to present his long form birth certificate or other document listed. The fix is in.
well, i’m so glad people can now get on the ballot for president of the united states without having to provide eligibility requirements
i think i’ll start a campaign to get mittens, the international cat of mystery, onto the ballot
