Not the only veto she issued tonight, either. She also rejected a bill that would have allowed people to carry guns on state college campuses on grounds that it was poorly written. Not a total surprise given the political climate in the state after Gabby Giffordss shooting, but a mild surprise given the grassroots conservative cred Brewer built for herself by championing Arizonas immigration law.
This ones a genuine surprise, though.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed a bill to require President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove their U.S. citizenship before their names can appear on the states ballot
I do not support designating one person [i.e. the secretary of state] as the gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate, which could lead to arbitrary or politically motivated decisions, said Brewer, who was secretary of state until she became governor in 2009.
In addition, I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for president of the greatest and most powerful nation on Earth to submit their early baptismal circumcision certificates among other records to the Arizona secretary of state, she said. This is a bridge too far.
Im guessing theres some local political angle that explains this, but I cant figure out what it is and some furious googling reveals nothing. Any Arizonans willing and able to explain? She just started her new term so electoral politics is immaterial. Is there some core agenda item that she needs Democratic help to pass? Or is she trying to build goodwill with Obama for better cooperation on immigration? Or, just maybe, did she genuinely believe that the bill was stupid and embarrassing to Arizona? All theories welcome.

If they vote again it passes her Veto.
She’s been “gotten to”
Team Obama must have gotten some kind of dirt on her and is blackmailing her... or threatening her.
The bill was passed by a large majority in both houses and her explanation for the veto (above) is far from adequate. Until a better explanation is offered by Brewer I put this down to lack of courage. Disgusting.
The birther thing is disappointing, but not surprising.
The campus gun bill thing - if the bill really was poorly written, then it probably needed vetoed and redone. Sometimes, bills really are poorly written, which leaves them open to all kinds of problems, from vulnerability to legal challenges to misuses that were never intended by the original authors of the bill (see U.S. Constitution, 14th amendment). A bad bill is worse than no bill at all.
My thinking too. As have a lot of em.
Yeah, they're going down like flies.
What would it take & how possible to override the veto?
She also vetoed the guns on college campus bill. I wasn’t exactly impressed a few minutes ago when she appeared on Greta’s show and said “No guns on our college campuses, no guns on our kindergarten campuses!”
Uh, how could following the law as written be arbitrary or politically motivated? Anyway, don't you have a state supreme court to handle such things if they did happen?
Her justification makes sense but she should have brought that up during the drafting of the bill so a good one was sent her way. A single person as a gatekeeper could risk both corruption as well as putting the State in legal turmoil. Imagine if for some reason, the next SoS is a Dem and decides to ‘accidentally’ lose all Republican’s paperwork or find some little thing wrong with it and disqualify every Republican candidate.
It still takes bravery to stay free. What’s it going to take for us to remain the land of the free because we are the home of the brave?
Maybe someone can enlighten me, but I just heard her explanation and is she saying it is better that there is NO gatekeeper than to have the Secretary of State validate candidates? I thought that was part of the job description. According to the courts, citizens have no standing to question the eligibility- now she doesn’t want the SOS to have the right either...I am confused.
Well, it looks like they are dating or something.
I support eligibility legislation, but am somewhat confused by the “or” baptismal or circumsion certificate. Why not only a birth certificate?
It appears to me that the legislation that is in process in Arizona will do the opposite of what various news reports have characterized the bill to accomplish. Of course, America is only his mothers country. Barrys alleged biological fathers country was Kenya. I recommend that people read the information about the bill that is available at the Arizona web address as follows: [www.azleg.gov]
The current wording of that Arizona bill could be interpreted as making a child born to only one American parent a natural born United States citizen. Note the bills language as follows: A person who is born subject to the jurisdiction of the United States is a natural born United States citizen.
What would it take & how possible to amend and resubmit? (Stupid to leave up to one person.) I guess what would make sense is the state formulating how it would officially regard something as unconstitutional. Then incorporate that formula into the bill.
I don’t even think it would have taken any courage to sign these bills as they were passed with a large majority. Somebody got to Brewer. This is the screwiest thing I have seen in awhile.
They got to the GA legislature by threatening to withhold Federal funding for the Savannah Port Improvement project and now the eligibility bill is floundering in the state legislature.
Obama is in desparation mode.
