Jefferson Smith loves a good political joke.
Early last year, the then-freshman Oregon House member from Portland was getting ready for bed when he and his wife, Katy, began bantering back and forth about what might be the ultimate political prank, something that could lighten the increasingly divisive political mood among his colleagues.
As Smith recalls, the idea came almost instantly. "What if we were to Rick Roll the legislature without anybody noticing?" he wondered.
And that was the seed for what may ultimately prove to be one of the most elaborate political jokes of all time: A nearly two-minute long video of members of the Oregon House of Representatives saying the lyrics of Rick Astley's ubiquitous '80s pop ballad, "Never Gonna Give You Up," literally one word or phrase at a time while in session.
As The Ticket reported yesterday, the video, which was posted to YouTube on April Fools Day, has quickly gone viral, meriting write-ups on dozens of blogs and even getting play on MSNBC.
The big question: Was it real?
The answer, according to Smith, "absolutely."

I never, ever thought I would see the day...
Here's the link to the video, with the view count.

BTW, with a split legislature, they are working together. Go figure...;o)
Ping to you because you were the first to post it.

What a great April Fool’s Day joke!
Oregon ping!
dems are all smiles and giggles... tickling each other and encouraging the republicans to go along with the jovial spirit...
when they aren’t in power
once they’re in power, it’s sit down, shut up, we won... suck it
all dems can shove it up their a**. if they’re going along with the progressive agenda, they’re all traitors pushing however they can to destroy the republic
if the republicans are too stupid to figure this out, they should step aside... there are plenty of adults ready to take the chair
Yep, Dems and Reps laughing it up while they chip away at our freedoms in “bipartisan” fashion this year. Pardon me that I’m not amused.
A lot of people think politicians are mostly clowns, anyhow.
If the Oregon legislature can waste its time doing this, then perhaps it should adjourn for the remainder of its term. It clearly has nothing better to do.
What is the origin of the term “Rick Rolled”? I know it from what seems a totally different context.
D’OH!!!
RICKROLL????????
I guess an explanation of the term is not needed and I am getting too old to know this BS(and I just googled it...still dont get it.....).
Firstly, it’s not a “Rick Roll”.
Secondly, “And the lines of the lyrics had to be spread out, so as not to tip off the state House clerk or other observers to what lawmakers were up to.” - Who’s thought process is so random and disjointed that they’re going to catch on to it? And why would they care?
Thirdly, I’m glad Oregon’s reached a utopian state that’s afforded these morons the time to put this plan into motion.
And lastly, IT’S NOT FUNNY.
a Rickroll is essentially a prank where you trick someone into clicking on a link to the youtube video of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” smash hit music video from the 1980’s...for example:
Hey! did you see the video that I made of my grandchildren? I posted it on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
neve heard of him.
most people haven’t...I shoulda included the sarc tag after the smash hit nonsense...it is actually a meme that is about 10 years old already and even at its peak it was mainly popular with teenagers and 20 somethings...
Exactly! I’m all for a good internet Meme but it’s not like times are great and they have nothing to do. It could have been a few years ago.
Right now it just makes them all look like they don’t work for us and think the job is a joke. (which here is Oregon is true)
But replacing them all won’t happen. Vote by mail eliminated that possibility from ever happening. God help us out here.
“Work together” means the GOPers give in
Vote by Mail = elected Democrats last a lifetime?
