Hybrid Car (Volt) May Have Sparked Garage Blaze

BARKHAMSTED, Conn. -- Fire officials suspect an electric hybrid car may have sparked an overnight blaze in a garage in Barkhamsted on Center Hill Road.

Homeowner Storm Connors and his wife, Dee, said they awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm around 4 a.m. The couple said they have lived in the home for nearly 40 years. They built it and raised their children there, so when the flames took over their attached garage Thursday morning, burning it down to its beams, the couple started to panic. They said they were worried they were going to lose their home and the memories inside.

...

Within minutes of the 911 call reporting the fire, nearly 50 firefighters from surrounding communities headed to the scene.

...

Now investigators with the state fire marshal's office and the couple's insurance company are looking into what exactly in the garage sparked the fire.

Officials said they can't rule out that the couple's brand new Chevy Volt hybrid had something to do with the blaze.

The fire is under investigation.

IF this turns out to be Volt related, then I'm inclined to write it off as part of the ole’ development cycle problem.

The first few years are frequently consumed (as it were) with obtaining a practical answer to the question, “what could possibly go wrong?” You design something to be idiot proof, then discover the world has produced better idiots.

My dad used to talk about being able to spot new model T owners by looking for casts on their arms. Seems a lot of them had to learn the lesson about holding the crank right and retarding the spark through unpleasant experience.

My whole issue is just the futility of producing something that uses energy created by burning fossil fuels as an answer to over reliance on fossil fuels.

These batteries don’t emit hydrogen during charging.

I thought for cars, only lead-acid batteries put out hydrogen when charging.
The Volt uses Lithium ion batteries. I don’t know if they release any gas when charging although they might if they’re over charged and the relief valve opens.

Well that is a good question. Was it the factory Chevy Volt, or the home converted to EV Suzuki Samurai or was it even something else like the charging station or water heater??

It was a Reagan quote. The current breed of Republican leaders look and think more like Nazi Pelozi. That what she said the other day when she suggested they dump the tea party and come over to the dark side.

I know next to zero about lithium ion. Just an off the cuff question.I won’t be rushing off to be the first one on the block to own one though
