Hybrid Car (Volt) May Have Sparked Garage Blaze

BARKHAMSTED, Conn. -- Fire officials suspect an electric hybrid car may have sparked an overnight blaze in a garage in Barkhamsted on Center Hill Road.

Homeowner Storm Connors and his wife, Dee, said they awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm around 4 a.m. The couple said they have lived in the home for nearly 40 years. They built it and raised their children there, so when the flames took over their attached garage Thursday morning, burning it down to its beams, the couple started to panic. They said they were worried they were going to lose their home and the memories inside.

...

Within minutes of the 911 call reporting the fire, nearly 50 firefighters from surrounding communities headed to the scene.

...

Now investigators with the state fire marshal's office and the couple's insurance company are looking into what exactly in the garage sparked the fire.

Officials said they can't rule out that the couple's brand new Chevy Volt hybrid had something to do with the blaze.

The fire is under investigation.

Don't be so quick to judge before the facts are in. It's not like a garage never burned down before.

My neighbors garage caught fire and burned to the ground due to faulty wiring of a electric dryer.

Before the investigation, people here would be wise to not shoot their mouths off about the Volt. I've seen ICE cars catch fire as a result of accidents and people were killed. There are a lot of foolish people making comments here and most don't know what they are talking about.

As far as the Chevy Volt is Concerned, here's an article:

This is from the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers):

Chevy Volt Wins Honor

I’m sure the folks over at NBC, owned by GE, will get right on these hybrid car charging fires. Being a responsible company, GE won’t mind if this hurts their EV charging station business.

Here we go!
I knew something like this would come out soon.

Who would have peace of mind sleeping at night while your crappy electric car was charging in the garage below your bedroom?

Now that i think about it, I’m barely covering my mortgage at the moment.
I should buy a Volt, Short out the battery and rig it to catch fire, Then collect on all of the insurance from my burned down home and volt plus the all the $$$ from the many lawsuits that i will file.

hmmm..............

Could it be hydrogen from the battery being ignited by the water heater? Inquiring minds want to know

“can’t rule out” is a long way from “definitely caused” in my book

Remember the fake Toyota Prius runaway on the Calif freeway.

Maybe Government Motors should rename it the Chevy Torch.

How many Volts are now on the road? Not many, I’m thinking. This fire and all the energy burned up by the fireman responding to it ...... not to mention all the fuss and bother about the inevitable recalls, lawsuits, etc. should make quite a ‘footprint”.

Somehow, I don’t think this will be the last we hear of such incidents involving the Volt and other “green” cars.

Hey Truthguy, I'm with you. This report from AutoBlog says that along with the Volt there was a HOMEMADE EV also in the garage. I'll wait to pass judgment.

I am voting for under rated/faulty wiring in the garage.

My BIL thinks he is saving the world because he drives a Prius.

I told him the effect he has on saving the Environment is like him pissing in the Ocean while a Blue Whale is 100 yards in front of him having a 500 pound Bowel Movement.

Why buy a Volt when they already built their own Hybrid?

Must have been the $10,000 in Tax Rebates their neighbors paid for.

For propaganda purposes they can lean on the bend-over-backwards NFL and have the Indianapolis team change its name to the Volts or San Diego, which frequently is referred to as the Bolts, can also switch the secondary nickname to the Volts.
