Seventy-five year old Perry Thrasher is a veteran in the spinal cord unit at the Memphis VA Hospital.
He is paralyzed, but his family says he wanted a confederate flag for his room.
"His granddaddy was in the Confederate War and it means a lot to him because he served in it. It's just his heritage," says Diane Boatner, Thrasher's daughter.
She was shocked by what happened Friday.
"He was all upset and crying. The VA Police had come and told him he couldn't have it. He had it right over his bed," says Boatner.
She says a nurse saw the flag and was offended.
Hospital police said the flag had to come down.

Wow. So much for the First Amendment, eh?
Someone get pappy a set of glasses with the Confederate flag printed on the inside. Problem solved.
True enough. I would doubt that most Southerners under 35 would know race irrespective. However, I imagine many know who Sojourner Truth and Elizabeth Stanton are.
Better yet, send him a card with the Rebel flag on it. I doubt cards are against the rules. :)
>She says a nurse saw the flag and was offended.
Then tell the nurse to not come around his room.
Sorry White Guy, that flag has been deemed politically incorrect by people you have never heard of.
Wouldn’t you be more comfortable with these Black Power, and Gay Rainbow flags???
America is here in name only like the Constitution.
Somehow, I don’t think the gay caballeros flag of many colors would be very simpatico to the VA staff that didn’t cotton to the Stars and Bars. Black folks do not care much for the ‘down low’,
Then she can be REALLY "offended".
Wow, even the union jack is on the insignia. Talk about history.
That’s government run health care for you. More examples coming soon with Obamacare.
Its inclusion offends me.
Nice guys, too.
Very polite and “Southern”.
Best stay outta Winchester, then....:)
Not just the Union Jack, but the old one (before Ireland was incorporated into it with the red “X”) from the American Revolution.
That IS history.
I just sent Mr. Thrasher a card, a couple of small stickers with flags on them, a battle flag charm, a deck of playing cards, and a coffee mug.
I hope he likes the stuff as much as I did sending it.
You got that right. They should instead use the real flag of the confederacy (i.e. the First National Flag of the Confederacy). Georgia’s current flag is based on this flag. I am sure the that none of the douchebags at the hospital would have known anything about that flag. In fact, they ought to try it right now.
