Budget tricks helped Obama save programs from cuts.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The historic $38 billion in budget cuts resulting from at-times hostile bargaining between Congress and the Obama White House were accomplished in large part by pruning money left over from previous years, using accounting sleight of hand and going after programs President Barack Obama had targeted anyway.

Such moves permitted Obama to save favorite programs - Pell grants for poor college students, health research and "Race to the Top" aid for public schools, among others - from Republican knives, according to new details of the legislation released Tuesday morning.

This makes it sound as if Boehner's "huge victory" was hollow at best. I'm not surprised, I've said many times Boehner is not the right GOP leader. The GOP needs a leader who is not of the elite and one with "fire in the belly." Boehner has been in DC too long and has become a part of the "ruling class" as a result. He does not serve "conservatism" well.

Respectfully, the GOP needs leaders who are more afraid of their constituents and less afraid of the MSM.

Get rid of the damn Head start program and let the kids have full time kindergarten with a cutoff age 5 by Feb 1st.

My grandaughter is a sophomore. I was a junior at her age because of the cutoff change.

"Boehner has been in DC too long and has become a part of the "ruling class" as a result."

Is what someone would say if they can't begin to imagine how complicated the jobs of Speaker of the House or Senate Leader are. You think that a rank amateur would be better. It's laughable.

Moreover, John Boehner represents 1/4 of government. THAT'S IT. The GOP won one election in 4-years, and yet you think that Boehner can wave a magic wand, and undo those four years in an instant. That's ridiculous.

When the GOP can manage to win another election or two in a row, you MIGHT then be able to see some substantive changes - that presumes that the GOP can manage to get the kinds of super-majorities that the Dems enjoyed for 4-years. And, the GOP won't have any chance of winning another election, if they manage to shut the government down.

Keep one thing in mind, since 1988 the Republican have won the popular vote in a national election just ONCE - just once. Boehner and the GOP will continue to have an uphill fight, but you speak as if they're sitting on an overwhelming governing majority, and doing nothing why they have it. It's preposterous and wholly uninformed.

I guess I'm supposed to be happy with these cuts. By the same logic I guess one would be happy if his torturer quit hitting quit as hard. Not to mention the blood that has already spilled (red ink indeed) hasn't even been addressed.

Ali, who coined the phrase rope a dope, at least was in the ring with fighters who were as accomplished as he was. (.)bama on the other hand, when he battles with the GOP is fighting a war with an opponent who shows up with no arms.

I have been saying this for weeks; NEVER trust a guy who cries at the drop of a hat, it is the symptom of someone with some internal problems or weakness.

The Dems just love it that Boehner is being castraqted by his own. Of course, that's the media's intent.

And Obama will step to the podium and say this is HIS legacy...cutting spending...He's nuts!! The Dem congress folks are being threatened with extinction.

HaHaHa! Obama sure pulled a fast one!

Wait a minute... We’re fricking broke and China owns our national parks and farmland because we couldn’t pay our debts.
This is no longer funny!

Boehner castrated himself with all of his blubbering! He showed how weak he was and is! I am not going to agree with him because I am a Republican! He is doing a lousy job! If he couldn’t stand up for shutting down the gov’t, HOW is he ever going to stand up and CUT REAL MONEY?

The simple truth is we had them by the balls and we let go. We always let go. They know we will and they depend on it. Until we get them by the balls and DON’T let go until we get what we want nothing is going to change. They depend on us being sensitive to how what we’re doing comes across in the MSM, etc.

We will have them that way again when the debt limit increase comes up. My guess is we will let them go again.

I don’t see anything changing until the entire system collapses on itself. Maybe, and it’s a BIG maybe, we will be able to pick up the pieces and restore some semblance to what America once was.

We had ‘em and we let ‘em go. They can provide all the excuses they want, but that’s the truth of it and they will have to live with having given up the chance of a lifetime to get their way without owning both houses of Congress and the White House.

They have one more chance with the debt limit. The 2012 budget process is a joke. If they can’t see the need to cut billions then trillions will certainly exceed their grasp.

Regardless of how badly they thought squeezing tighter rather than letting go would hurt them it won’t be as much as having to live with the knowledge they had the chance and pissed it away.

And what do you think would have happened if Dems had total control of Congress. Do you really thing the budget would have been cut??

don't buy into it. These programs wouldn't have been cut if left up to Obama by himself.

It does sound like a campaign sound bite for somebody.... Obama: “I tricked America”.

Exactly.

And now I find out it's not going to cut an additional $38.5 billion. That headline number includes $12 billion in cuts that were included in three prior short-term funding resolutions. That leaves lawmakers looking for $26.5 billion to cut from agencies and programs.

Crybaby has to go now, or we don't have a chance negotiating a 2012 budget
