Trump says he’d probably run as independent if he doesn’t win Republican nomination

Gee, this seems so …. familiar:

Donald Trump will “probably” run as an independent candidate for U.S. President in 2012 if he does not receive the Republican party’s nomination, he told the Wall Street Journal in a video interview on Monday. …

“I am very conservative,” said Mr. Trump. “The concern is if I don’t win [the GOP primary] will I run as an independent, and I think the answer is probably yes.” Mr. Trump said he thought he “could possibly win as an independent,” adding, “I’m not doing it for any other reason. I like winning.”

As for foreign policy, Mr. Trump said he is “only interested in Libya if we take the oil,” and that if he were President, “I would not leave Iraq and let Iran take over the oil.” He remains sharply critical of the Chinese, asserting that as President, “I would tell China that you’re either going to shape up, or I’m going to tax you at 25% for all the products you send into this country.”

The only difference between Trump and H. Ross Perot seems to be that Perot was a better businessman. About four minutes into the interview, Kelly Evans hits Trump on his flirtations with bankruptcy over the years. Trump insists that he never filed for bankruptcy, which is true in terms of his personal finances, although Trump came close enough to it. His businesses were another matter. Trump’s Taj Mahal casino had to go through bankruptcy, which cost Trump half of the casino. The Trump Plaza Hotel next went through bankruptcy, which caused him to lose 49% of the hotel and resign from its management. Two years ago, Trump Entertainment Resorts filed for Chapter 11, and in 2008 his Trump International Tower in Chicago defaulted on a $40 million loan. In response, Trump blamed the global economic collapse and tried to have it declared an Act of God to relieve himself of responsibility for the default.

That’s not exactly a great track record for a chief executive. It’s worth noting that his own investors have booted him from management at these holdings after his risk-taking and failures.

Otherwise, this is a second coming of Perot. Trump has the money (at least for now) to mount a vanity campaign as a third-party alternative to the two major-party nominees. This would end up splitting the anti-Obama vote and set the President up for an easy re-election through a popular-vote plurality that would translate into an overwhelming Electoral College majority. Liberals are not going to flock to Trump’s side for any reason, which means whatever Trump draws will come directly from those who were already inclined to vote against Obama. It would be a nightmare scenario for Republicans in this cycle, a sort of Charlie Crist on steroids and junk bonds but with a viable Democratic opponent in the mix.

The GOP should nip this in the bud now. Can we agree that the starting position for anyone seeking the Republican nomination is that they will support the outcome of the primaries?

The Manchurian Candidate’s puppet (Trump) insures his re-election. Disgusting.

To think so many conservatives ran to his banner. Idiots.

I’m wondering if this was intended for that purpose.

I keep thinking if he WERE really intending to do this to re-elect Obama, that he wouldn’t show his hand yet.

He will then extend the evil reign of the bad boy King BOZerO. Trump will be a chump if Obama he fails to dump.

"As bad as Romney is, he's better than Obama."

Wrong premise.

No wonder they call the GOP the stupid party. Stupid can never be fixed.

They run Dole against Clinton and then blame Perot for sucking the votes away from their lame candidate rather than learn not to nominate a lame candidate. They run McCain against Obama and blame conservatives for not voting for their lame candidate.

Now the party of stupid, which is to stupid to learn from their past mistakes, wants to nominate another lame candidate and are already blaming people who will vote third party rather than back their lame candidate.

Of course, they will never compromise their point of view and support the third party, they just come up with lame excuses ("As bad as Romney is, he's better than Obama") to point out why you should support another lame candidate.

They just trimmed the budget deficit by 1% after winning a "Cut the Deficit" election victory.

They still participate in "open primaries" and show no sign or interest in switching to either closed primaries or caucuses (in those states where closed primaries aren't an option).

They exhibit .0001% of the SURVIVAL INSTINCT necessary to be a great party.

Their chances of intelligently crafting the proposed resolution regarding "supporting the outcome of the primaries" and forcefully enforcing it are smaller than the chances of putting a tea-kettle on to boil, with the flame on high, and have it freeze instead. (Lisa Murkowski anyone?)

The GOP is heavily loaded with COWARDLY FOOLS and they are not ABOUT to do ANYTHING that makes sense, especially something that makes sense and would require GUTS to enforce.

Look at that smarmy transvestite lesbian whore Karl Rove. You see the current face of the GOP.

Here’s a thought:

Trump knows the Establishment wants Romney. Trump himself isn’t a big fan of Romney (assumption, I don’t really know).

He also knows Romney can’t beat Obama. So, he shoots for the GOP nod, but knows that he may run as an Independent if Romney gets the nomination and doesn’t have the poll numbers to win, since the final outcome would be either Obama whether he runs or not, or, a slight chance Trump himself actually pulls it off.

Nobody gets EV majority - House decides election - Romney wins.

Romney is NOT better than Obama. He's a complete idiot. My point is, the GOP will pick our candidate "once again" and not us.

Yes, I can't stand him personally, but no matter how bad Romney is, he would still have to rely on Republicans for support and this means he would have to consider what they want when it comes to policy and ESPECIALLY when it comes to things like choosing Supreme Court justices. This means we have a chance of at least getting decent supreme court nominees out of RINO Romney. From Obama we KNOW we will get hard left supreme court nominees. The make up of the Supreme Court is simply to important to even consider voting for vanity 3rd party candidates who everyone knows won't win.

Perhaps we all need to be more vocal to let the GOP know we have a voice & it's not what they want anymore!

Aren't we doing that already? Romney is NOT popular among the base, the only reasons he polls fairly well is because he's well known and a certain subset of the Republican party think he is the most electable.

I do not want to see Bozo another 4 years, I don't want to see him another day, but Romney? You know well & good that is who the GOP has hand picked for us, another case of "holding our nose" and voting!!!

The establishment GOP is not able to hand pick our candidate at this time. The Tea Party, grass roots and movement conservative base is too active, energized and coordinated for that. If Romney wins the nomination it will be because the Tea Party and conservative base failed to coalesce around one candidate in the primaries and allowed their vote to be split. Romney could simply benefit from infighting amongst the Tea Party and conservative base.

Still, no matter what emerges from the Republican nomination process, it will be better than Obama - at least insofar as choosing the next Supreme Court justices go.

Good analysis. I guess it is a waiting game right now. My concern is more O. Would our Country survive four more years?!

Not so sure about that.

Trump could easily pull ~40% of disaffected white Democrats. Might be enough to tip the balance or at least result in nobody getting 270 EV’s. Esp. if it were three way w/o Sarah.

He likes winning? It’s not gonna happen if he runs as an independent.

<><><><<>><><

He could run under any banner and still lose. I will make the following bold prediction and y’all read it here first.

Donald Trump will not ever be the President of the United States of America. Unless he opens a Casino named the United States of America.

Possibly and an angle I didn’t consider.

However, simply actually running (as an R) would surprise a lot of people since he’s teased about it before.

I still think that trump is working with Hillary. He is
Friends with them and his agent is Rahm’s brother. Check Trump’s contributions to candidates in past. He is shilling for Hill, and who’s to say this wasn’t the whole plan from begining. Render Obama useless and bring Hill in. Seems plausable to me.Trump is the right person to deliver the goods. Question:So what is Trumps relationship with Soros? Do they smoke cigars together? The only thing that puzzles me is how Rush gets along with Trump. He is usually onto something beforehand.

Who is Michael Bloomberg a stalking horse for?

Has Trump replaced Bloomberg as to candidate most likely to manipulate the mushy middle?
