Jerry Brown: California, Country Facing ‘Regime Crisis’ Similar To The Civil War

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — While Washington averted a government shutdown this week, California Governor Jerry Brown continues with his budget battles.

The governor may feel like he’s in a recurring nightmare these days. Everywhere he turns with a proposed budget fix it gets shot down.

“If we don’t get taxes, if we don’t get cuts, we’re gonna have a hard time balancing the budget,” Brown said. “Many of the Republicans told me, ‘We’re not taxing and we’re not cutting. It’s your job — you’re the governor.’”

But Republicans who show up to protest at many of the governor’s events these days say it’s Brown who’s not living up to his words.

“Fix it, Governor Brown, and I’ll be the first person that would be more than happy to give you money,” said Robert Ledbetter, who was protesting outside one of Brown’s events.

California Republican Party Vice Chair Steven Baric says Brown is not showing he’s much of a leader.

“He promised he would show true leadership and he’s failing to do that. And if he wants to show true leadership let’s have true pension reform,” Baric said.

this weekend, CBS 2/KCAL 9 political reporter Dave Bryan asked Governor Brown about the criticisms:

DB: Many of the Republicans I talk to say that they’re not convinced that you’re serious about pension reform and about cutting the slack in government, cutting the bureaucracy down. They feel that you haven’t put forward, for example, a meaningful pension reform plan because of your connection to the unions.

JB: They have to say that to give cover to their position, which is ‘No’. Their position is ‘No, we’re not going to help you. We’re not going to do anything. Well, that’s unacceptable. I did propose 12 points of pension reform.

The governor tells Dave he believes the country hasn’t been this divided since the Civil War.

This week Brown has been using Civil War metaphors at his public events to describe the deep divisions in California, and the entire country for that matter, preaching with the passion of a born-again that the country is dangerously polarized.

“We are at a point of civil discord, and I would not minimize the risk to our country and to our state. It is not trivial. I’ve been around a long time, I’m a student of history, I’m a student of contemporary politics. We are facing what I would call a ‘regime crisis.’ The legitimacy of our very democratic institutions are in question,” he said.

I remember you...Run along now strango.

Still completely sick in the head, and hurling the ad hominems, I see. Reasoned, civil communication still fails to register with you.

You're a bitter, screwed up person, drag.

Keep your powder dry, and stay locked and loaded, but do remember to shoot at the real enemy, ok? They're nearly at your door.

The problem we have here is that renters outnumber homeowners. They happily vote to screw property owners with new taxes. The fools don’t realize that they still get stuck with the bill when they pay their landlords’ property taxes along with the rent. They don’t have the 2/3 majority necessary to pass those taxes on their own, but if they can fool enough ‘rat homeowners...

As bad as conditions are in California, you still treat this like some childish game. There you sit, surrounded by millions of people who would take your very life if just the right spark were to flare, yet you make juvenile warfare upon your own kind.

The day may come, when you are pleading for your fellow Americans to come to your aid, or you're seeking the shelter and protection of friends. Do you really care so little for the cultural ties that bind us, that you would so casually dismiss us?

You're targeting the wrong people, friend. You need to figure out who your enemy is, and turn your invective on them.

Good night.

Not in my area...I’d guess the homeowners outnumber the renters 20-1.

As I said, Brown or anyone else would have better luck juggling chain saws before resurrecting 13. Won’t happen. That would be as popular as a public pay phone in the senseless murder district.

You are a strange, thin skinned individual. It's clear, anyone who says anything you don't like regarding Texas, you're going to cry, stomp your feet and throw a major tantrum. You've done this *multiple* times in the past hoping you can intimidate me and others into remaining silent. It might work on others, but you don't intimidate me, slick.

When you told me it was not conservative and against forum rules to post articles you didn't like regarding Texas, I knew you were some kind of odd ball or nut case.

You'll note most everyone else came to this thread for the first 100 posts, discussed the article and comments made by Brown...You however came to lecture and pretend this is all about CA, when even the title of the thread, and Brown's comments told you it was not.

You do not intimidate me. Get it?

Jerry Brown is a self-admitted liar. Everything he says is suspect. Only the effects of any actions he takes can be measured. That should probably be applied to all politicians. It would save a lot of time on tiresome speculation.

As is your President. But thanks for that profound tip.

That being said, the fact remains people are able to see things are getting really ugly regarding government corruption. You know there is wide spread, possibly irreversible descension when statements like this below are voiced by people like Brown:

"This week Brown has been using Civil War metaphors at his public events to describe the deep divisions in California, and the entire country for that matter....that the country is dangerously polarized."

"We are at a point of civil discord, and I would not minimize the risk to our country and to our state."

I wonder how much of a drain the freaking illegal vermin are on the kalifornistan/national budget? Get rid of them and you might free up a couple billion dollars.

Every time I travel to the LA area, I get the impression the metro area is actually in Mexico. Now that I no long am working, I refuse to go over there.

When you told me it was not conservative and against forum rules to post articles you didn't like regarding Texas, I knew you were some kind of odd ball or nut case.

What I told you before (on multiple occasions), and what I still maintain, is that it's inappropriate to use someone else's forum (which is their personal property) to run your own pet crusade.

That has been my one and only opinion about what you do, from the very start. You want to let your feverish mind carry you off into paranoia land, go right ahead. I'm not persecuting you, nor have I ever attempted to do so.

Fact: I've done my level best to engage you in intelligent, civil conversation too many times to count, but you've proven yourself incapable of handling a simple disagreement like an adult. Nearly every time we've talked, you've resorted to snarling retorts, and ad hominems.

It's pretty obvious that you're holding a nasty grudge about our previous conversations, and now have a completely knee-jerk reaction to me. Go back to my first post on the thread, and you'll see that I went out of my way steer clear of pushing your buttons.

Whatever. Stay crazy.
