John Boehner closes the deal to avoid government shutdown
POLITICO ^ | 4/9/11 2:35 AM EDT | JOHN BRESNAHAN & JAKE SHERMAN

They gathered in HC-5 all week talking — sometimes complaining loudly — about where the party was headed in the budget crisis. Many said House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) didn’t share enough information. Others were peeved he wasn’t pushing for deep enough cuts. Some were ready for a government shutdown.

And on Friday night, Boehner himself was unsure what would happen. Halfway through a closed-door meeting of House Republicans, an aide approached Boehner, slipped him a piece a paper, which he read and quickly pocketed.

He then stepped to the podium, and announced what everyone had been waiting for.

“We have a deal,” the Ohio Republican said around 10:30 p.m.

And with that, Boehner had something more — a defining moment in his speakership and a chance to set aside questions about his ability to manage an unwieldy caucus of conservatives, at least for now.

The 61-year-old, swept into the speaker’s chair during last November’s GOP landslide, faced down two Democrats — Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) — and answered doubts from the conservative movement about whether he was a true believer.

What “government shutdown?” That bull**** was just a liberal myth spewed by the commie libs in the state run “media”. There never was or was going to be a “government shutdown”. Just a bunch of horse**** from the politicians to squeeze more money out of the America people.

“We control one-half of one-third of the government,” Issa added. “I think that when you come as far as we’ve come, $79 billion less than it would have been had we not taken control of one-half of one-third of the government, that’s pretty darn good.” The $79 billion figure represents the full level of cuts for all of fiscal 2011.

Cuts?

The 2011 budget is now larger, and the 2011 budget deficit is now larger than the 2010 "Stimulus" budget.

Booehner caved!

He's a leader of the consistent party, what else is he to do?

“We have a deal,” the Ohio Republican said around 10:30 p.m.

There wasn't a November "shellacking" so you could go in and compromise for a deal John.

The government insiders, those on the government payroll, etc, do not appreciate you saying that.

It’s upsetting their good cop, bad cop choreographed charade.

Be a good boy, follow the others chasing the thrown bone.

That may be true....but it is much LESS than the Dems in the Senate and Obama Wanted....Therefore it is a VICTORY of sorts....

But it is just the first little battle!

I think the Speaker and the GOP got as much as they could without shutting down the government, which would definitely be a mistake. Good show, I say!

Boehner came out and said a few days ago that they weren’t going to shut down the Government. What kind of negotiator does that? Giving up any strength of positioning for what? To look good in press?

It was then a given, Reps would compromise.

What happens on the third day with Obama? It seems anyone on the Conservative side always caves on the third day of meeting with our very persuasive imposter!

I would agree...”a victory of sorts”, but only because the conversation has now been changed to “how much do we cut”, rather than, “how many more trillions in debt are these yahoos going to put on the books THIS month?”

Does anyone remember the government shut down of 1995?

I do. ...wanna know what happened?

Nothing, absolutely NOTHING! Except that it created two weeks of headlines for the liberal media to use to beat up republicans.

“Controversial policy riders covering Planned Parenthood and EPA climate change regulations had threatened to sink the whole, multi-tiered agreement, but Boehner was able to shift that battle over to the Senate.”

Not only did Boehner get Punked, but he let himself get Punked at the expense of thousands of unborn babies who will never be able to voice their opinion on the budget deal.
