US Report: 'Shoot-to-Kill' Orders on North Korean Border

The United States on Friday reported dire human rights abuses in North Korea, including infanticide, and said that border guards appeared to have shoot-to-kill orders against fleeing refugees.

The State Department’s annual human rights survey pointed to problems across the board in the rigidly controlled communist state, although it acknowledged it was mostly relying on second-hand accounts due to a lack of US access.

The report cited reports that North Korea had a policy of executing anyone who leaves the impoverished country -- generally, by sneaking into neighboring China -- but said it could not verify whether or how many people died.

“Border guards reportedly had orders to shoot to kill potential defectors, and prison guards were under orders to shoot to kill those attempting to escape from political prison camps,” it said.

Women repatriated to North Korea -- who were sometimes the victims of sexual trafficking in China -- were forced to undergo abortions or their children were killed on birth, the report said.

“Defectors continued to report that many prisoners died from torture, disease, starvation, exposure to the elements or a combination of these causes,” it said.

The State Department said there was no progress in efforts to account for Japanese civilians kidnapped by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s to train the regime’s spies -- a major diplomatic priority for Tokyo.

The report also pointed to sweeping restrictions in North Korea on freedom of speech, including on the Internet.

However, the study quoted press accounts as saying that some 300,000 North Koreans now have mobile telephones, although they are not allowed to call overseas and face repercussions if they use unauthorized Chinese phones.

Isn’t communism grand? I thought if, according to the libs, there was no pesky religion to cause divisions and the benevolent government handled everything, it would be utopia. The libs will just say that this is not communism followed properly. If followed properly, North Korea would be a paradise.

Maybe when Jimmy Carter visits there, he can get accidentally lost and try to cross the border.

This is the perfect place to employ the Obama Doctrine. We have a "Responsibility to Protect".

Yes, there's systematic infanticide in NK...post-birth infanticide.

It's darn-near like the Donner Party over there.

One day that regime will fall and people will find it was far worse and far more extensive slaughter than the Nazi's perpetrated.

Hell, it'd darn near be merciful to nuke 'em all.

Better yet, nuke the one's with the guns and do what you can to help the survivors.

Kind and merciful by any measure.

According to the zero regime, this justifies a no-fly zone until we are flat broke, then boots on the ground.

At least in Cuba, they line them up against a wall and offer them a cigarette first.
