Gates Urges 'Restraint' as Iraqi Forces Allegedly Attack Iranian Dissident Camp

BAGHDAD – Defense Secretary Robert Gates urged the Iraqi government on Friday to "show restraint" after security forces stormed an Iranian opposition refugee camp that had long existed under the protection of the U.S. and its coalition partners.

"We have been monitoring the situation at Camp Ashraf in Diyala," said Gates after a visit with American troops in Iraq. "We are very concerned with reports of deaths, of injuries resulting from this morning's clash between Iraqi Security Forces and the MEK. I urge the Iraqi government to show restraint and live up to their commitments to treat the residents of Ashraf in accordance with Iraqi law and their international obligations."

Gates said no American troops were involved in the attacks, but that medical assistance was offered.

I believe its a sign that Iran basically owns Iraq now.

Shows how badly we have lost this situation, the Iranians here are the ones opposed to Iran's government. The Iraqi police are working for Iran here.

I'm almost 100% sure this is the first time we peons in the U.S. have heard about such a camp even existing.

You can be sure the AP and the lefty media will now hop to it with alacrity to twist this incident so it will become an American "massacre" and "atrocity".

I’ve known about this camp since the war began. Infact, the National Guard sent a lot of troops there to protect these guys. It has been in the media for years. The truth will set you free!

Please ask the next 20 people you bump into in your mileu where "Camp Ashraf" is and what it's for....and then get back to me. Thanks.

This is beyond dangerous for our troops inI raq. If we try to protect the Iranian dissidents, we are in a war with the regular Iraqi army that we equipped and trained. This is bad. Very bad.

No, there was much about it during the invasion, bush made them give up their heavy weapons, a really, really dumb move.

The Iraqis are royally pissed off because the U.S. backed Saudis are helping the suppression of Shi’ite protestors in Bahran. For this reason, it is entirely logical that they are coming closer to Iran.

The Iraqis have wanted to dismantle the camp and get rid of the group for a long time. Sounds like that’s what’s happening
