16 miles, too deep for any thing significant.

You have to keep in mind this...

That area sank to the tune of 2-3 feet in elevation from the mega quake last month.

a 2-3 foot tsunami will carry much more weight then they have in the past.

When this first occurred they were warning of tsunami waves ranging from 1 meter to 30 cm. Small yes, but I'm sure they are a bit wiggy right now after being hit with that last monstrosity!

I get confused as to could this be almost considered an aftershock from the original quake, what is the criteria for designated it as an aftershock or a separate earthquake?

usgs has combined into a single event, mag 7.1 with a depth of 30 miles.

Quakes of that size and depth are unlikely to generate a tsunami of any significance.

NOAA has no alerts posted.

If a tsunami has been generated, should be seeing evidence of it by now.

Or it is a big foreshock. Seems a bit different than that 9.0.

Concur, japan has automated many seismic functions, probably seeing that in the initial local warnings.
