Republicans would cut $12 billion in one-week stopgap plan

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — A budget deal that would keep the government running past Friday is closer than ever, President Barack Obama said Tuesday, as top congressional Republicans and Democrats planned another round of negotiations aimed at hammering out a spending plan for the next six months.

Clock ticking toward shutdown

As the click ticks toward this Friday's possible U.S. government shutdown, WSJ's Jerry Seib looks at proposals being weighed by Republicans and Democrats, along with efforts to raise the country's debt ceiling.

“We are now closer than we have ever been to getting an agreement. There’s no reason why we should not get an agreement,” Obama said in a surprise appearance at Tuesday’s regular White House briefing. He said that it would be “inexcusable” not to fund the government and added that a new stopgap bill keeping the government running past Friday would be acceptable if Republicans and Democrats first agree on a bill funding the government through Sept. 30.

Shut it down. We are so screwed up that a spending budget for the next 6 months can’t be agreed upon.... what, is the sand not deep enough for the Dems to fully insert their heads into?

Rush is going thru all of this right now....Clinton caused the 94 shutdown...by his veto.

Dems are trying a slightly different tactic this time.

Objective is to have the same success they had in 94.

Don’t be fooled. Obama and the Democrats want to shut down the government. These statements about how close a deal is and how the members of Congress needing to act like adults are to set up Obama blaming the Tea Party freshmen Representatives and Republicans in general.

The rallying cry should be: The Republicans have tried mightily to pass the FY11 federal budget, a budget that was the responsibility of the Democrat-controlled 111th Congress to enact. The Democrats created the budget problem and are the ones who have continued the problem for the last six months.

What I hear Obama saying, then, is that it was inexcusable for Pelosi, Reid, and Obama not to write a budget for this year...and that the only way to save his, Pelosi's, and Reid's reputation is for the Republicans to cave on their guiding principles?!?! Am I hearing him correctly?!?!

Why should the Republicans go along with anything he has to offer? They have the high ground on this one, and they have the 2010 voters on their side (despite slanted media coverage of opposition this year). Elections have consequences...or so we were told in 2008.

“Boner will cave, count on it.”

In the Orwellian World of left Media lies we now live in, I have no doubt about it.

On another board, I have a long-time lib member DENYING that the left/Democrats EVER blamed Bush for high gas prices.

I just don’t know how to get past utter hypocrisy.
