Having just plodded through former Senator and currently failed politicician John Sununu's turgid little hit piece in the Boston Globe, I am struck by the irony of his premise. In his article, he lumps Sarah Palin and Donald Trump together as candidates and dismisses them as "two media stars" with an overweening ambition to BE President (as opposed to wanting to DO things as President):
"Both Trump and Palin also seem captivated by the idea of BEING president. They obviously like the idea of running for president, and spend a great deal of time talking about what they would do if they were president."
And elsewhere:
"But like the framers, I have always felt ill at ease with officeholders or candidates who are too enamored with the idea of HOLDING a particular office."
Trump is a sideshow, and the fact that Sununu associates the two in this article exposes his motivations for what they are. Trump is not going to be the GOP nominee, and anyone with an ounce of political sense knows this. He is not a serious candidate, but a creature from the media freak show on the Eastern seaboard, who has never been a conservative and would do less well than Arlen Specter in a GOP primary. Sarah Palin is a serious candidate, and Sununu seeks to diminish her by associating her with Trump.
But his premise--that she wants to BE President and to HOLD the office for its own sake--is even more false than the association of Palin with Trump. Palin seems not at all enamored with the idea of RUNNING for President, as Sununu suggests. She doesn't even seem attracted by the idea of being President, the trappings and such, because the Presidency would entail an even greater--and permanent--loss of freedom and privacy for herself and for her family. Her motivations are clear. She wants to use the Presidency to restore the Constitutional balance and fiscal stability of the Republic she loves. Her record as Mayor and Governor suggests that she runs for office in order to accomplish things, not merely to HOLD the office. Her pronouncements on public policy from QE 2 to Obamacare to restraining government spending are a very comprehensive road map to what a Palin Presidency would look like, and her ambitious agenda suggests that it would be the among the most consequential of the last half century. Her seriousness of purpose is what engenders the white hot hatred both by the Left and the GOP Establishment. My goodness, they shriek, the Lady actually means it!
But back to the irony of Sununu's piece? It is that Sununu's entire political career is joined at the hip with George H.W. Bush, whom his father served as White House Chief of Staff. Few people have ever wanted to BE President more than Bush 41 (or Bush 43, for that matter), but had very little to nothing that they wanted to DO as President. During both Bush administrations, the country was adrift, and it drifted in wrong directions leading to the ascent of, first, Clinton and then Obama. Yet Sununu is either too myopic to see it or too intellectually dishonest to acknowledge it. Instead he dismisses Palin with the very same criticism that should appropriately be pasted on his benefactors and sponsors, the Bushes.
Sounds like he describing Bam Bam
Sununu is a has-been RINO trying to regain the limelight by ingratiating himself to the ‘rats and MSM, not too different from Jumpin’ Jim Jeffords or the twin witches from Maine.
I see Sarah and the Donald both as feeling called more than being being ambitious. Neither has spent serious legal fees trying to hide history from the public. Both will take a pay cut with either a campaign or by serving in office.
Sununu needs to go back to being a nobody. If he can’t help himself and really feels the need to bash somebody, why doesn’t the boy bash one of those extremist commie bastards on the left that’s out there destroying America. Go home Johnny. We Americans have a country to save and can’t be wasting our time fooling around with a little nobody like you.
Bwahaha!!!
That’s rich, coming from a Romney backer.
“Sununu needs to go back to being a nobody.”
*******************************************
He won’t have to go far. At his apex he was not significant.
Sununu is just the latest in a long line of has beens and wannbes who are trying to grasp a little bit of Sarah Palin’s star, and ingratiate themselves to the Lametream media and its Establihsment first cousin by bashing her a la Kathleen Parker, Jeenifer Rubin, etc.
Their arguments are so transparently dishonest and usually historically flawed as well that they wind up hoisted by their own petard.
Like father, like son.
Sununu is just carrying water for the RINO Cocktail Party wing of the GOP. Barbara is determined that Jeb shall be the nominee and she’s going to punch every button and call in every favor ever owed to either Bush to make that happen.
And she’s NOT going to let the prize stolen from her precious darling by Sarah.
sununu and his daddy... both bush globalist uber liberals. If they are for it... you had better study the issue hard and completely.
LLS
LOL! I agree. Johnny's "15 minutes" sure didn't last very long.
If he had not included Sarah Palin, the GLOBE would never have printed it
Trump is not a serious candidate or a serious person. He is nothing more than a circus barker. He was saying Obama was doing a fine job a year ago, wasn’t he? He was a social liberal who also proposed a one time wealth tax a decade ago.
No surprise.
Sununu is just another Bushite. Just another left-wing RINO from the globalist, internationalist, Saudi-sucking-up Klan of the Bush family.
NO MORE BUSHES!!!!!!
Jeb doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell after he allowed the murder of Terri Schiavo in his death state.
Sunnunu was the guy who championed the moron David Souter for the Supreme Court.
By implication you are suggesting that Barack Obama is a serious president.
You must be responding to someone else's comment.
The only thing serious about Obie-Won is the damage he is doing to this country and to other countries too, come to think of it.
Both Trump and Palin also seem captivated by the idea of BEING president. .................................... No where near as much as Hillary! Palin has a good shot at being nominated, she also has an excellent shot, like Hillary, to run as a Senator in another state. (Where is Bristol living? ;^) )
