60% of U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan Have Occurred Since Obama Was Inaugurated in 2009

By Edwin Mora

(CNSNews.com) – At least 858 U.S. soldiers have died in the Afghanistan war since President Barack Obama took office in January 2009. That equals 60 percent of the 1,427 American soldiers killed so far in the 10-year war in that country.

In March 2011, there were 26 U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan, including 4 non-combat related fatalities. That brought the total combat and non-combat deaths for 2011 (January, February, and March) to 70. Those fatalities include 57 combat-related deaths and 13 non-combat deaths.

Of the 858 U.S. deaths since Obama’s inauguration, 791 have been combat-related. This means that for the 1,241 combat-related deaths that occurred since the Afghanistan war began in October 2001, about 64 percent happened in the two years since Obama took office.

Last year was the deadliest for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, with 497 combat and non-combat fatalities. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs), or homemade bombs, continue to be the number one killer of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

The Afghan provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, which border Pakistan and have been the central focus of U.S. military operations in recent years, continue to be the deadliest regions for American soldiers.

The database includes American troops who died in and around Afghanistan while supporting military efforts against terrorism under Operation Enduring Freedom. That operation was launched on Oct. 7, 2001 to topple the Taliban regime and pursue al Qaeda after it used Afghanistan as a base for the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States.

More than 40 troop-contributing countries are involved in the campaign under NATO’s International Security Assistance Force, commanded by U.S. Army General David Petraeus.

In addition to those who died in Afghanistan, CNSNews.com’s database includes some Americans who died in Pakistan and others who died in the Arabian Sea while supporting operations in Afghanistan.

Gen. Petraeus testified before members of Congress last month that U.S. troops are on track to begin withdrawing in July 2011, although he did no specify the scope of the withdrawal.

The Obama administration has said it is committed to having Afghan forces in the lead of their own security by 2014 and has added that it will maintain a long-term relationship with Afghanistan.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai last month announced the areas that are ready to be transitioned to his country’s forces.

Nevertheless, Gen. Petraeus and a top-Pentagon official have indicated [3] that they would be open to maintaining jointly-operated military bases in Afghanistan beyond 2014.

in light of the fact that our current administration has called for the outster of every MiddleEast ally that was intstrumental to the fight against Al-Queda and terrorism, I see no further reason for our troops to remain deployed in Afganistan or Iraq, other than Zero’s fear of having them all home at one time.

I agree. If we’re not going to jump sides and help Al Qaeda regain Afghanistan like we’re doing everywhere else, there’s no need for us to stay there.

At the bottom of my profile page is a running tally from when mcchrystal took over in afghanistan to when petraeus took over. We rampaged all over FR trying to call attention to it. Many of those deaths were equal to murder with the blood of our Troops squarely at obama’s feet with mcchrystal pulling the trigger.
Markos33, ping your pinger please.

Are the anti-war people still adding crosses to that hill across from the Lafayette Ca Bart station, or was that just an anti-Bush thing?

It probably ended on Nov 3rd 2008.

Welcome to Bozo’s ROE. Thanks to the liar in chief, our soldiers are dying faster than ever. Where is the outcry from the left wing hypocrites?

This article is a sad object lesson in why our Founding Fathers made it a requirement that our president be a natural born citizen. We now have an occupant of the White House who appears to sympathize with the enemy. Our military is being used to strengthen and consolidate the power of regimes who have plainly stated that they want the destruction of our troops and of our nation.

If our highest military officers know or suspect that Obama is ineligible then I would expect that they would seek certifiable clarification of the issue from Congress, the courts, or from Obama himself.

So?...What evidence to these highest officers have that Obama is a natural born citizen? What evidence is there that they have sought clarification?

Lakin in his court martial testified that higher level officers told him that they had serious questions about Obama’s eligibility. Personally, I believe him. What lawful and legal action have these officers taken to resolve their doubts? Is it now part of the military code of honor to turn a blind eye to corruption in the chain of command.

Personally, although I believe that these highest officers would fall on a grenade for their troops in a battle against a foreign enemy, I have no faith in them to defend the nation ( or protect the troops under them) from domestic enemies. Their careers, perks, and pensions mean more to them than their oath to defend the Constitution, or the safety of the troops.

If true tyranny comes to the U.S. the leaders who will defend the Constitution will come from the lower officer ranks and from those who are retired.

They were faked before. They only used the dead American soldiers and the pictures they marched with for political purposes and that purpose was only to get democrats back in control.

I'm sure the moment after McCain conceded those pictures of the young American soldiers went into the dumpster.

They're doing it again with the budget. One democrat was rooting for a government shutdown days ago hoping that it will scare the elderly into thinking they will not be getting their social security checks.

This poster calls for impeachment.

Only a legitimate president can be impeached. Usurpers are arrested.

The only thing Boehner needs to do is subpoena Obama’s long form birth certificate and a few other common documents.

I’m sure he didn’t specify the scope because my son deploys to Afghanistan in July of 2011. All this withdraw talk is utter crap. It’s not happening.

Only liberals can be outraged over military deaths. Cindy Sheen and Code Pink will only return when a Republican is elected.
