General David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, is expected to leave that job by early fall. And the question has been, where does he go from there?
Several sources, including government officials, say Petraeus is being seriously considered for CIA director, and would take the job if offered.
The current spy chief, Leon Panetta, is currently seen as the top replacement for Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who says he will step down this year.
White House and Pentagon officials say they will not comment on any personnel changes.
For some time, there was an expectation that Petraeus would take the top NATO military job in Brussels. NATO's current supreme commander, U.S. Adm. James Stavridis, is wrapping up his tour and is expected to become the Navy's next top officer, chief of naval operations.
Sources say Petraeus has cooled on the Brussels job. And there are few high profile military jobs left for him.

Remember, he cannot be SECDEF until the Fall of 2021.
The guy can’t keep his mouth shut NOW, in things that shouldn’t concern him!
CIA? Sure
Isn’t the position of Koranic Sensitivity Czar currently vacant?
Petraeus should be Court-Martialed...not rewarded...for attacking Pastor Terry Jones...and not the Islamic Terrorists that Petraeus is supposed to be fighting
Heck, Petraeus probably would be giving the Islamic Terrorists our state secrets....if his predecessors have not already done so.
Well they purposely ruined everything else, why not sink this ship, all they need is this guy and a can of strawberries.
Ugh. Too much of a toady.
I don’t see him voluntarily working for the current DNI, Clapper. Clapper is a retired 3-star (IIRC) and a laughingstock in the military intel community.
Colonel, USAFR
Petraeus is an absolute disgrace. Anyone who puts Shariah Law above the 1st Amendment has no business leading our fighting men and women in combat, let alone be trusted with our nation’s most secret intelligence. He should be FIRED.
Just what America needs. A freedom hating Mullah in charge of the CIA.
Petraeus is in charge of fighting a war in which he has to see Americans troops injured or killed almost every day. Any commander worth the uniform would be pissed at some numbskull "minister" doing something that may lead to the death of more of the men he leads, purely for the ego of said "minister".
Petraeus didn't make his statement out of sympathy or concern for the sensitivies of muslim extremists. He did it out of concern for his own men and the mission they are trying to accomplish.
But hey, let all the folks who've never been in harms' way call him a traitor or hater of freedom.
Pathetic.
I’m callin’ BS on you pal.
Eisenhauer never made our troops wear Nazi symbols, to keep them happy in Germany.
I myself am quite disappointed to see the good Genr’l come out and make that apologetic statement .
I think most in the star ranks get a little too much concerned about their careers and out of touch with what’s really going on.
If the coup comes , it will be led by much lower ranking gents , who still have a good grasp of reality ,
as they have often faced our true enemies on the battlefield .
Nor, for that matter, telling them to convert, fly an islamic flag, or bow to Mecca.
He's just justifiably pissed of at a guy 8000 miles aways who is doing something stupid that may cost the lives of his men.
The Japanese during WWII considered Emperor Hirohito a God, you never heard anyone saying that we couldn’t insult the Emperor.
A lot worse gets posted here on FR. They could read anything posted here in Afghanistan, so should we stop doing that, just because it might offend somebody over there?
They rioted over a friggin’ cartoon!!!!! Why is it so far-fetched to believe that something posted on a web site, such as FR, could set them off?
