Paul Ryan makes the case for staggering spending cuts
The Daily Caller ^ | 5 Apr 2011 | Jonathan Strong

Rolling out a plan that is as shocking in how much it cuts as President Obama’s first budget was in how much it spent, Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan is laying out a case for huge spending cuts in a new white paper that couches the coming battle in almost apocalyptic terms.

“This generation’s defining moment has arrived,” Ryan says in his conclusion.

At issue is the GOP’s proposed budget, which cuts $5.8 trillion over 10 years, including massive cuts to entitlement programs experts say are driving the government towards a fiscal cliff.

The bold move by Ryan and House Republicans is by far the most significant action they have taken to embrace the wave of political energy over spending issues that propelled them into control of the House in November.

But the budget faces an inevitably harsh reaction in the Democratic-controlled Senate and will have limited implications for what the government actually spends; as Ryan admits, it is a blueprint that begins the discussion rather than a proposal to change the actual law.

“Government at all levels is mired in debt. Mismanagement and overspending have left a nation on the brink of bankruptcy,” Ryan says in “The Path to Prosperity,” the white paper defending his budget proposal.

Ryan undergirds his argument with a series of charts that aim to show how increased government spending, especially from Medicare and Medicaid, are driving massive deficits rather than a lack of revenue from taxes.

One shows that under current law spending by the federal government as a share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is slated for a long climb up from around 20 percent to 80 percent in 2080.

Staggering spending cuts? If you want to see what ‘staggering’ really looks like, let Barry and the boys keep on spending like they have been. Staggering will then be the least descriptive word to describe the USA.

Ryan is a true leader, one who can make the tough and most defintely unpopular decisions. And he deals in FACTS, a concept the Left cannot comprehend or chooses to ignore. He will have my unwavering support, no matter what office he chooses to serve in.

I propose a rule for Paul Ryan threads that is similar to that for any mention of Catherine Zeta-Jones and/or Maureen Dowd. We Freeper chicks are entitled to some fun, too!

Ryan is wonderful he is a real numbers wonk and very matter of fact. All of the squells from the emotional left are greeted by a very rashional reply and he swats them down like they are files. He should think about running for higher office later on when he is older.I believe he is only 40 yo right now.

I wonder what they’d think of my proposed cuts. Anything outside of Art 1 Sec 8 goes. Period. No exceptions.

The Republican leadership is behind Ryan on this! WAAY behind - over in the tall grass...

After all, getting re-elected is more important than actually doing something significant, right?

Ryan is a true leader, one who can make the tough and most defintely unpopular decisions.

This is the same Ryan that voted for Medicare Part D? Is this the Paul Ryan that voted for Tarp? Above all Ryan is a technocrat. He has no sense of the evils of government that most of our Founders clearly saw. No one with a strong reverence for the Constitution would ever have voted for such programs.

That said, I am glad he is on our side. However, no matter how bold these proposals seem, the will likely mean little in the end.

The momentum for larger government at all levels shows little sign of slowing down. The voting demographics are such that the odds of "limited government" Representatives gaining enough power and numbers over a number of election cycles to make a difference, is quite low.

Everyone can easily see the elites and the monstrous bureaucracies they constructed will likely crush Liberty. It seems out of anyone's control. I honestly can't see Ryan's proposals going anywhere or making a serious difference. Time will tell.

The Republican proposal is all smoke and mirrors. If Ryan were serious he would reduce excessive federal spending by eliminating all federal agencies not in compliance with any of the enumerated powers granted to Congress in Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution.

There are no enumerated powers to regulate the environment, communications, education, food, drugs, health, agriculture, alcohol, tobacco and firearms. These powers are reserved to the states or to the people per the 10th Amendment. Consequently agencies that are Unconstitutional include but are not limited to the EPA, FCC, Department of Education, FDA, DHHS, Department of Agriculture and the BATFE and must be abolished!

Congress will never balance the budget so long as they continue to have powers beyond those permitted to them in Article 1 Section 8 thereby usurping those powers delegated to the people in the 10th Amendment. Congress must comply with the Constitution in order balance the budget.

“Staggering Cuts.”

We just added 1.5 trillion to spending every year. What’s so staggering about cutting 580 billion of that? It’s less than half of the increase.
