With just five days left before a government shutdown, federal workers are pressing lawmakers to cut a deal that will keep the government open for business.
The stakes are high. If lawmakers fail to pass some kind of spending bill by the end of Friday, hundreds of thousands of government employees are likely to be furloughed, and their paychecks stopped.
The National Treasury Employees Union and the National Federation of Federal Employees, which represent a combined 260,000 workers, announced Monday they have asked their members to call lawmakers and encourage them to strike a deal.

Having experienced the shutdown in 1995-96, I sympathize with my fellow Federal FReepers. It’s an anxious time. I can only note that in the last shutdown, we federal employees all received our back pay and benefits that were due to us, and I’d expect the same thing will happen this time if there’s a shutdown.
Looking forward to the shutdown.. .In Belgium, the citizens are overjoyed not to have a central government, going on a year there.............

Don’t they (and didn’t they) get paid for even the time it was shut down last time? Just after the end of the shutdown.
Then I am hoping they never reopen.

That’s true, whatexit, if the shutdown lasts very long. If it’s a short one, many consulting firms pay the employees even if the government won’t.
If back pay and benefits were received for the 'down time', why the anxiety? It's a paid vacation which I'll bet wasn't charged against regular vacation time.

Once again UNION for taxpayer paid employees.
Of course the article is hateful. Government employees are making $74,000. Also they are “white”. What is this? Complete and utter BS.
The Republicans should beat the rush and proudly take credit for the shutdown before the media blames them for it.
The government can’t protect us from invasion at our southern border. The government didn’t protect us from foreign attacks on the Trade Center in 1993 or 2001. Defense is the one responsibility given to the federal government and they have failed miserably. We would be much better off spending our tax money locally, rather than sending it to the useless, wasteful D.C. government.
A shutdown is a shut down. Everywhere but the government - no work, no pay.
Frankly, the “shutdown” would impact conservative sacred cows more than liberals. Lib pockets would still go on, but we’d lose things like veterans benefits along with revenue generators like monuments.
And it wouldn’t save any money—it would just provide free paid vacations for many.
True reform is needed, whether or not the “shutdown” occurs.
Even more dangerous for people like you would be that the taxpayers might realize they have very little need for a federal government.
With the prolonged shutdowns following 9/11, at least some stopped all administrative leave.
Playin small violin. When I get a client backing out on a job, I don’t get a cancellation fee, even if I’ve spent time to bid on the project. I just go on to the next bid & hope I get it.
PS my biz is down 62% & I gotta still pay my own healthcare & SS; so nope don’t feel any sympathy in regards to persons with loads of gov’t perks & bennies.
