Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is set to introduce a bill Monday night to fund the military through September and fund government operations for one more week, Republican sources tell The Hill.
Boehner's move is intended to prevent a government shutdown that would start after Friday without another measure to fund the government.
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) said the GOP was trying to prevent a government shutdown "at all costs."
Were serious about trying to prevent a government shutdown. Were also serious about cutting spending," he told reporters after a meeting of the GOP conference on Monday evening.
Boehner told GOP lawmakers attending a closed-door conference meeting that he needed leverage going into a meeting with President Obama and Senate Democratic leaders at the White House on Tuesday morning, a lawmaker told The Hill.
He said he needs this (the as-of-yet-introduced bill) and the support of the conference going into that meeting at the White House, because he feels it gives him more leverage, the source explained to The Hill.

This is excellent politics.
Boehner is taking the lead with another preemptive strike. Notice that it's Boehner who is leading the efforts, and not Reid or any other Democrat, to prevent a "government shutdown". Boehner knows there will be a shutdown, and he is cementing the notion ahead of time that the Republicans did everything they could to prevent it from happening. See, mindless rabble? It's the Democrats' fault!
I love that the Republicans are finally learning the art of political jiu jitsu.

The budget IS being cut.

Congress has cut $10 billion over a five week period via two continuing resolutions.
Yet the national debt is increasing at a rate of approximately $4 billion A DAY!
Pardon the unintended pun, but that just ain’t gonna cut it!
Compassionate, what in the world is that sucking sound.!!!!
You are correct, living up to commitments, is just so yesterday, why hell let the spending continue, we will show them next year. Party, party, party. That will last until people say they are lying about fixing things, going to vote, hell why bother. That will be the end results.
You seem to have forgotten about the additional tens of billions a week they are spending at the same time they are “cutting” a week here and a week there.
he got the job only because he looks better on TV than the others ... wake up people
Not pleased, but do understand it if they are on the brink of a real deal. We need to put 2011 to bed so we can adopt the Ryan 2012 plan.
lol, what makes you think if they don’t have a backbone to win the budget issue in 2011 that the Ryan Plan will ever see the light of day for 2012?
I heard the same from a DC insider.
Obama has already cut their SS, by not allowing any COL increases. Not only that, but most SS recipients remember what the promise of America once was. Tea partiers are not dumb, pal. They know damn well that the future of their grandchildren rests on how they push their congress.
Three reasons:
1) 2011 was the opposition's job.
2) The urgency of this budget makes it impossible to negotiate without the 'impending doom' of the shutdown.
3) More time will be available for educating the populace and countering the lies from the Professional Left.
maybe not Boehner, but you sure are displaying the group think of DC.
Delaying the inevitable...
Maybe its time to flush the entire cadre of knuckleheads this next election...
Might be too late by then...
boehner needs spinal viagra.
I think they are the modern day Whigs. They are simply trying to save the failed system rather than eliminate the root cause of the problem. Sorry but that will not cut it. I am going back to being a happy Libertarian. Republicans are always going to flop.
Folks if you aren’t on Facebook, sign up if for no other reason than to “talk” to your officials. Boehner is showing himself to be a spineless man who must have forgotten about the november election.
People who know me but respect my opinion could not understand why I was not optimistic when the Republicans took the House last November.
I tried hard not to be pessimistic.
I want the pink-tie crybaby GONE. Replace him. He is not only worthless, he is AIDING THE ENEMY.
As a matter of fact, I haven’t seen Bachmann cry at all.
So much for winning the House in November.
If we had conservative leaders who know how to play a dirty little game called Politics, it would be an excellent idea.
Did you forget how the left essentially “shut down” a portion of the government out in the midwest recently? The government unions “shut down” the government whenever they need to promote their cause and make a gain. And it works well...because they know how to use it politically.
What does shutting down the government mean? Have you swallowed the propaganda BS that it means shutting everything down, grinding all government services to a halt?
Well that would be incorrect. What they want to do is keep the essential services up-and-running but shut down the non-essential services.
That is EXACTLY what we need to do.
If you don’t pay your electric bill, the utility company SHUTS DOWN YOUR ELECTRICITY.
Well the leftist who ran this country into the ground for the past 5 years HAVE NOT BEEN PAYING THEIR BILLS.
We need an orchestrated campaign to communicate to the people where we are fiscally, how we got here, why we need to shut SOME portions of our government down, AND WE NEED TO PLAY POLITICS IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE LEFT LOSES.
These G-D Republicans keep caving to these effing tyrants and giving ground every day.
AND I’M SICK OF OUR SIDE RUNNING AND HIDING. WE NEED TO SHOVE IT DOWN THEIR THROATS.
