Fatal Gun Battle at Apple Store
NBC San Diego ^ | 4/4/11

Posted on 04/04/2011 11:49:55 AM PDT by verum ago

An armed security guard, hired by Apple to protect one of its San Diego stores, confronted and killed a smash and grab suspect in a gun battle early Monday.

One person is dead and two people have been taken into custody following the shooting at Otay Ranch Towne Center in the Eastlake section of Chula Vista according to police.

The Apple store manager was working inside when just before 7 a.m. the guard confronted two men and a woman. The suspects had smashed into the store's front doors, sending shattered glass out onto the sidewalk. The guard told police a gun battle started when one suspect produced a handgun. More than a dozen yellow evidence markers were on the ground just outside the store's front door.

Investigators said the three suspects got into a silver Acura and crashed into a light pole and a post before stopping on the curb outside Banana Republic. The passenger side door was left open with what appeared to be a body still inside.

Police confirm the unidentified man was shot and killed by the security guard. The second man and woman ran from the mall heading east, police said.

Patrol cars blocked the intersection of Eastlake Parkway and Birch Road leading into the outdoor mall. Chula Vista police officers, U.S. Border Patrol agents and San Diego County sheriff's deputies searched the neighborhood near the mall.

Around 8 a.m., law enforcement officers with guns drawn approached a section of townhomes in the Winding Walk community east of the shopping center.

Officers entered an alley between two buildings and pulled out two people. A female was cuffed and walked to a patrol car. The second, a man, was originally cuffed and patted down. Then, he was treated by medical personnel for a gunshot wound in the buttocks before being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

The suspects were positively identified by Apple store employees, according to Chula Vista police.

The Apple store security guard was not injured, police said. Eastlake High School, Wolf Canyon Elementary School, Veterans Elementary School and Olympian High School were placed on lockdown according to district officials. Those lockdowns were lifted by 9:30 a.m. Mater Dei Catholic High School, first reported to be on lockdown, reported that it was back in session as well.

The thing I don’t understand from reading it is -

(Assuming the suspects were outside the store wanted to get in), how can they smash the door front and ‘sending shattered glass out onto the sidewalk’?

My son is a real estate broker. At the time, his coworkers and many employees were Spanish speaking. About 95% of his customers were Spanish speaking. He speaks Spanish fluently, so that wasn't an impediment, but it did result in rubbing elbows with the wealthy segments of the Mexican community. The victims of the crime lived in TJ and had driven their car to the parking lot in front on my son's condo. A van pulled in behind their car. The assailants pulled the driver out of the car and shot him in the head on the spot. The passenger was pulled into the van, beaten and dumped by the side of the road away from the condo complex. The wrong people were attacked and killed, so the real targets were still in danger.

This is just sad. Apple stores are probably the most docile places to go. They are busy but by far nothing violent.

“The fact that an Apple iStore needs armed guards tells us something about the state of affairs in San Diego. Apple stores are found in upscale shopping drags. Not in the hood.”

Actually, no. Chula Vista is a less-than-upscale area, often referred to locally as “Chula Juana” - a reference to nearby Tijuana, Mexico. Tijuana is a pretty rough city. It’s a border town, if you have money you can find pretty much anything there.

Apple would have been wise to stick to Fashion Valley, La Jolla and other nice areas. I’m sure the Chula Vista store struggles profit-wise compared with those in better locations.

I sincerely doubt the manager of the store was armed. Most insurance for stores specifically state that employees are not to stop thefts. That’s why clerks at Walmart and elsewhere are terminated if they pursue or enter into a fight with a robber.

And, that’s why they have armed guards who did his job in this case.

Otay Ranch, unfortunately, has fallen victim to the brilliant liberal idea that low-income housing should be constructed alongside half a million dollar homes.

I thought half a million dollar homes was low-income housing for California.

Once again the description of the perps was accidentally omitted.

I am sure that Apple will see to it that the armed guard will be fired.

There have been a couple of smash and grab burglaries at an Apple Store in Pittsburgh over the last several months. Both happened in the middle of the night. They put a brick through the window, went in and grabbed a bunch of stuff and took off. Gone by the time the cops got there.

When a very large plat of glass is hit and shatters the majority of the glass falls straight down. Which means the glass falls to both sides of the window frame. The article only observes the one side on the sidewalk. This is my best guess.
