Redbox is doing pretty well, actually. People seem OK spending a buck or two occasionally to see a specific movie.

Cable TV, on the other hand, is losing customers right and left due to streaming video. As more video is availabel via the internet (and even grandma finally figures out how to hook a computer to a TV), those $50-$100 a month cable bills start to look pretty steep.

what’s the problem with tux rentals?

Could it be today’s customers weight and size compared to yesterday?

renting a tuxedo??

People giving up formalwear entirely?
Because it can't be that guys are buying them and keeping them in the back of the closet.

I think you can thank Craig's List for this one. My son has to go to a formal wedding in June and he just bought a used tux off there for 100 bucks. The guy even threw in some old cufflinks. Best part was the seller only lived a few blocks away so my son just drove over and picked it up.

He had called the rental shop and it was a 150 bucks to rent one and that's why he started looking on Craig's List.

Nice deal, if you can find someone with a decent tux that fits.

Other than two weddings where I was in the bridal party (including one as the groom), I haven't had to attend anything that required a tux. I do have a maroon tux in the closet, but I don't think I'd actually wear it anyway without the green shirt, orange vest and white face paint.

I think it’s really news non-specialized record stores. Between the internet and Best Buy and the book stores and Target/ WalMart there’s just too much competition for a shrinking market. Once you go boutique or used most of that competition goes away.
