Top U.S. officials in Afghanistan on Sunday condemned the burning of a Quran in the United States that sparked three days of protests in which more than 20 people died.
Burning the Muslim holy book "was hateful, it was intolerant and it was extremely disrespectful and again, we condemn it in the strongest manner possible," said Gen. David Petraeus, who heads the U.S.-led international forces in Afghanistan.
U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry said in a statement that Americans respect the Quran "and all religious texts and deplore any action that shows disrespect to any religious faith."
"At the same time, I want to emphasize, as have many Afghan leaders, that to attack and kill innocent people in response to the deplorable act of one individual is outrageous, and an affront to human decency and dignity," Eikenbery's statement said.

The man didn’t break any laws, so why is it any of my business?
It’s pure conjecture to say that he knew that what he was doing would endanger the lives of our troops. And in fact, our troops were not in harm’s way, it was UN workers and other civilians that were killed.
Not that I necessarily agree with what he did, but if he wants to do it, and if it doesn’t break any laws, then he can knock himself out for all I care.
You can expect a call from General Petraeus anytime now.
I was in Iraq on my 4th tour when Petreus got there. I was really impressed with his politically incorrect view on things, and the fact that he was a “walking General” instead of a “talking General” like Sanchez. But now he too has become way too much of an Obama asskisser. Kissing the ass of a totally clueless dumbass like Obama is dangerous on so many levels.
That's where you and I obviously differ. I believe I have the right and responsibility to speak out against others who are doing something I believe is morally wrong. There are higher laws than the law of the land that I believe we have an obligation to stand up for.

In this case I don’t see a distinction.
The koran burning is no different than the cartoons, and similar to the military driving their tanks through Baghdad during the early days of Gulf II. All of these things are taken as an affront to islam that ‘must’ be responded to by killing Americans.
Driving the tanks through Baghdad ultimately was a part of the successful effort to draw the islamists to Iraq like moths to a flame.
I understand what you’re saying, we’ll just have to agree to disagree and leave it at that.
The difference is who is the Commander in Chief.
The fact that a single American exercising his God given right to exercise his own faith and to engage in free speech can cause such a turmoil in a place where thousands of Americans have given their lives to try to help these people enter the 20th Century, speaks volumes about why we should never have tried to rebuild that nation in the first place. We should have ousted the Taliban, left the country and then moved back in if they tried anything like that again.
Now we appease the same Taliban people by condemning our own citizens for exercising the right to be critical of the religion that led to the slaughter of over 3000 Americans on September 11, 2001.
We are appeasing our enemies. That has never worked in the past and will not work now. We are emboldening the Taliban by excusing the actions of Radical Muslims who kill indiscriminately using the pretext that some pastor 10,000 miles away may have dishonored their precious holy book.
I suspect that Terry Jones is going to be killed for his Koran burning in the near future. Just as the Danish Cartoonist was killed for simply drawing an unflattering picture of Mohamed and the Danish Filmmaker was killed for telling the truth about how women are treated in Islamic countries.
It is time to stop appeasing these people.
As one who has a family member in Afghan, another going next year, and one continuously in either Afghan or Iraq since the beginning of this war, I must disagree with you.
Pastor Jones might not be my brand of pastor, but he has done absolutely nothing wrong. This idea that "one wrong doesn't excuse another" is way out of proportion, too.
The afghans broke into a UN compound and murdered 7 people and are trying to murder more.
On the other side, we have a pastor who torched some paper and ink.
Can you begin to tell me what is equivalent about those 2 that would generate a "one wrong doesn't excuse another"?

Can you comprehend this? Burning a Koran doesn't harm our soldiers, the inability to face what we're really dealing with here is what harms them. Restrictive ROE is what gets our troops killed, not some preacher burning a book thousands of miles away. I understand that Petraeus has to toe the party line to a certain extent and he's a better commander than many who would replace him were he to actually speak his mind, but there comes a point where he either needs to keep his mouth shut about events back home or take a stand and tell the truth, consequences be damned.
It’s difficult for me to retain my civility. Petraeus is not taking care of the soldiers under his command. He is endangering them with his politically correct bull crap. That includes an ROE in Afghanistan that prohibits our soldiers from defending themselves if so-called non-combatants are even in the vicinity of the terrorist shooters.
As long as one American soldier—let alone my son— is being directed to fight with two arms tied behind their backs I’ll speak out. It is my God given right to do so. Who are you, anyway, to tell me what I may or may not say?
Apparently you have the same problem with an American’s right to free speech as does Petraeus. What other parts of our Constitution do you deem unimportant?

For the record I’m a retired US Army 05 (LTC). I served during the Vietnam and 1st Gulf War. I readily concede I was not in combat. However, as a student of soldiering for 28 years, and a history buff most of my life, I have learned some things along the way. I don’t have to have been a teacher to know bad teaching when I see it. I need not have been in combat to understand the political class—including the likes of Petraeus—are currently sending our soldiers in harm’s way with no intention of winning.
Our men and women are being killed and maimed. For what purpose? We’ve been at this idiocy for over 10 years and there is no end in sight. The Islamoterrorists, and the states that support them, should have been crushed by 2004.
Do you have any grasp how much of this country’s human and material wealth is being expended to put down a bunch of 17th Century religious zealots. Their only real weapons: A willingness to kill defenseless and innocent people and oil. We have the military strength to remedy the former and our own energy resources to remedy the later.
Why are we not doing so?
