Top U.S. officials in Afghanistan on Sunday condemned the burning of a Quran in the United States that sparked three days of protests in which more than 20 people died.
Burning the Muslim holy book "was hateful, it was intolerant and it was extremely disrespectful and again, we condemn it in the strongest manner possible," said Gen. David Petraeus, who heads the U.S.-led international forces in Afghanistan.
U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry said in a statement that Americans respect the Quran "and all religious texts and deplore any action that shows disrespect to any religious faith."
"At the same time, I want to emphasize, as have many Afghan leaders, that to attack and kill innocent people in response to the deplorable act of one individual is outrageous, and an affront to human decency and dignity," Eikenbery's statement said.

Again, I ask you: What oath did he take upon joining the military?
Your post rebukes that very thing, and negates what he (and every other member of our military) put himself in danger for.
Think about *that*, instead of names to call me for pointing out facts, instead of condoning anti-American (and anti-military) political correctness as you are espousing. :-(
Over my dead body! >:-(
General Petraeus needs to be hauled before the House Armed Services Committee and told to keep his big mouth shut concerning domestic U.S. affairs. It is none of his business or concern what some private American Citizen does with a koran. He also needs to be lectured about the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and what it means, something he is supposed to be protecting/defending.
IMHO, Petreaus is a disgrace to his commission when he makes statements like this. If he had any morals or convictions, he should have retired from the Army when Obamaramadingdong was elected. He is just as big a political whore as Defense Secretary Robert Gates is!
When it impacts operations on the ground in Afghanistan it very much becomes his business.
You got it. I would like to ask the general what Koran burning provoked 9/11?
BULL!!!
What an upside-down world we live in, even on FR.
He is doing his job, protecting his troops. That’s understandable.
That doesn’t meant everyone else’s free speech has to stop though.
Absolutely! They knew it was going to happen. Way back when the muslims cut off thir first head, it was becuse they knew that Jones was going to burn a as another Freeper put it , a queeran.
Somthing to ponder. What if the Japanese had waited until 2010 to bomb Pearl Harbor?
I hear you! I’m sitting here in tears at some of the responses from long time FReepers who should know better!!! :-O
It makes me very frightened thinking about the future of my children, but as a Christian, I know that God is in control, ultimately!!
LOL! Maybe you should draft up a Memorandum For Record that lists to GEN Petraeus exactly what his duties and responsibilities are since he doesn’t seem to know.
Petraeus is trying to cover his butt for the soldiers killing the civilians and making trophies of him. So he has a convenient scapegoat in this pastor to cover up his negligence.
Somebody should.
Maybe you and General Petreaus should study the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights together, something every member of the Armed Forces is supposed to protect and defend. Specifically the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and what it means.
You or Petreaus has no right to tell a private American citizen what they can or cannot do, especially on their own property!!!
Great post, fantom!!!
Absolutely. He didn’t call for burning the koran to be made illegal, unless I missed something. And his opinion should be just as protected as this wackadoo pastor. Those congress creeps who are saying otherwise are another matter.
Freegards
Protect them? They are in a war zone. They best be prepared to protect and defend themselves under any and all conditions. If they aren't, then he should lead them the hell out of there.
The Bible may not even be allowed there. Even if it is, we know for fact, no preaching of the gospel (proselytizing) is allowed by any troop in country.
Bottom line, F the "religion of peace." Burn their unholy book written by a pedophile. Burn their pedophile book calling for the beheading, of what the pedophile calls "infidels." That'd be all non-muslim believers. The pedophile demands his followers convert us, enslave us, or cut our heads off.
No apology should be offered for burning their garbage. No protest should be offered for burning their garbage.
At this juncture, it's just a matter of who will be killed first. I say we kill them before they kill us. And if burning their filthy pedophile garbage is offensive, then boohoo.
This is war. It's past time to engage the real enemy.
If a “Christian” religion existed in America, calling for the murder of all non-believers, where actions were being taken toward that end, WTF does anyone think would happen to this cult? So why do our “leaders” seek to play footsy with these muslims. Especially, when we know for fact, they seek our death and destruction?
Gen. Petraeus's ranting gives aid and comfort to the enemy. His words portray a hatred of the freedom of U.S. citizens, and mock the U.S. Constitution Petraeus swore to defend.
And this isn't the first time Gen. Petraeus has spit on the U.S. flag with his arrogant, anti-American talk (see Ben Stein's comments in the American Spectator from last September).
Gen. Benedict Arnold Petraeus is a disgrace to the uniform of a United States soldier.
