Top U.S. officials in Afghanistan on Sunday condemned the burning of a Quran in the United States that sparked three days of protests in which more than 20 people died.
Burning the Muslim holy book "was hateful, it was intolerant and it was extremely disrespectful and again, we condemn it in the strongest manner possible," said Gen. David Petraeus, who heads the U.S.-led international forces in Afghanistan.
U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry said in a statement that Americans respect the Quran "and all religious texts and deplore any action that shows disrespect to any religious faith."
"At the same time, I want to emphasize, as have many Afghan leaders, that to attack and kill innocent people in response to the deplorable act of one individual is outrageous, and an affront to human decency and dignity," Eikenbery's statement said.

...but Muslims can still talk about how they hate us and want to kill us and tear down our country right?
Bush did us a huge disservice with that line.
When he first said it, I thought it was along the lines of saying “nice doggie!” when confronted with a large snarling mongrel, whilst looking for a big rock.
Unfortunately, he meant it.
The moral equivalence argument of every multi-culti liberal. They don't get a pass on personal responsibility for their actions just because they think they do.
Tell me again why we should care that muzzies are killing each other? Our country should be concentrating on the destruction of every facet of their belief system, in order to end this 500 year war in our favor. When the Nazis worshiped at the altar of the swastika, and German superiority, we destroyed it in a wave of firebombs. When the Japanese worshiped the human “god on Earth” we destroyed their army, their will to fight, and their Emperor. With the ragheads, we treat their god with respect, their belief with respect, and send people to die for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. This series of wars is madness, simple as that.
I read that U.S. troops in the Middle East (S.A.) were forbidden Bibles (or carrying them around).
Wonder how many Bibles the Muslims have desecrated to date? Millions? Or merely hundreds of thousands. Like they desecrated early Christian and Jewish holy sites, churches, art, etc.
Liberals just lack the brain cells to figure out that our presence in the Middle East requires siding with the Sunni’s (who bottom line, are against the West) or the Shite’s (who bottom line, are against the West).
If you really knew anything about training a dog, you would know that you should be able to put food in front of it and have itsit still.
“The Taliban presided over a stable government so did Saddam.”
You have got to be kidding. Al Qaeda was operating in the power vacuum of a Taliban controlled territory. So was the Northern Alliance. Al Qaeda acted as a sovereign state in declaring war on us, punctuating it with, among other things, the events of September 11th, 2001 - though they were not one, only ensconced in another nominally sovereign state, Afghanistan, leading to the current mess.
Don’t mix Iraq in here with this: otherwise I’ll have to point to the stability of Qaddafi’s Libya, Mubarak’s Egypt, etc.
“You overestimate our ability to control events in Afghanistan. We really didn’t want Karzai. He doesn’t serve with our permission.”
See above in my previous post. My question there wasn’t just rhetorical. This conversation is basically over when you make an assertion, I then counter, and then you make the same assertion. We’re just in disagreement then, which I accept. I maintain that you’re wrong. You’re free to do the same. One of us is persisting in error. If it’s me, were I then to get the facts of the matter and change my mind, I’d be back here to admit to it. And I’d hope you’d do the same.
Please name ONE thing we have done that has pleased the Mooslems. No matter what we do, or don't do, it is always another excuse for barbarians to act ...well, barbaric.
Please, please, please just stop and think about what you are saying.
A little too personal. But bombing Dresden, Tokyo, etc, was OK.
At some point, we have to come to grips with how we are going to deal with this totalitarian ideology. Continually excusing actions like what occurred in the story under discussion is not the right answer, is the conclusion many have come to.
It’s none of Petraeus’ business, and he needs to be very careful as a military leader to stay out of domestic politics.
Our troops in the Middle East have very restrictive rules of engagement that are foisted on them for P.C. reasons, but that are daily causing our troops to be wounded and killed. Caulk up most wounds/deaths to mis-management in D.C.
As stupid as it may be, it’s still making a mountain out of a molehill. And anyone who chooses to make it a mountain, needs to be eradicated from the face of the Earth.
Sir, if you were right here in this room, I would be giving your neck the biggest hug EVER. THANK YOU for getting it!!!
The only legitimate questions is: was it his book?
If it was, it’s no one’s business what he does with it.
Why doesn’t Petraeus denounce the news media, who were the ones who made some guy burning his own book into an international story?
Well then they need to get their mind right, as Boss Kean would say. I'd say a MOAB in the middle of downtown Kabul would be a good start.
That he is.
And we're doing our job by condeming Petraeus.
So you are okay being the first in line kissing the butts of all those angry Muslims over there, so they will like us and make nice nice???? How quickly some people have forgetten ALL the things that Muslims have done ALREADY in the name of their god...but this little incident, which ranks right up there with the cartoonists making fun of Mo, is the be all, end all reason why our troops (WHO I LOVE SINCE SEVERAL MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY HAVE SERVED HONORABLY IN THE NAVY, ARMY, and NATIONAL GUARD, so don’t be stupid with your insults) are going to be killed from now on?
Did you happen to catch that little story last week about Obama’s “Kill Team” that seems to have dropped off the map? You think that sort of thing won’t cause disruptions over there??
IF PASTOR JONES LOSES HIS FREE SPEECH AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, WE *ALL* LOSE. And we might as well roll over and surrender right now. :*(
