Mike Huckabee wins South Carolina county straw poll

Mike Huckabee won a GOP straw poll in crucial early state South Carolina, further solidifying his status as a front-runner in a 2012 field that is still taking shape.

Huckabee won the York County GOP event on Saturday, snaring 23 percent of the first-pick voters, party officials confirmed to POLITICO.

Newt Gingrich was second, with 11 percent, and Michele Bachmann was third at 10 percent.

Mitt Romney snared 8 percent, and Donald Trump and Tim Pawlenty tied at 7 percent.

A slew of other would-be candidates, including nearby Southern-state governor Haley Barbour, Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, John Bolton, Herman Cain, Jon Huntsman, Gary Johnson, Ron Paul and Mitch Daniels all were on the ballot, but each failed to crack through five percent of support.

There were 152 ballots cast in the poll, which Huckabee called attention to through his Twitter feed on Saturday.

Yeah we heard this yesterday. 150 ppl polled.

MSM trying to give him momentum.

Funny how they don’t do so for Palin if they think she’s “so weak” hmm...

Huckabee is exactly the kind of candidate the left and their media would like to see win the GOP nomination. It will be McCain all over again.

Look at the bright side of the poll — Michele Bachmann did very well and Mitt Romney got buried.

Exactly, may as well just give it to President Barack Hussein Obama Jr. if Huckabee is the candidate... jez cannot we get some new blood and ideas to run the country.

I cannot stand him. He was the final straw for me and Fox on the weekends, well Geraldo didn’t help. I do not watch any show his is on. They are trying to pick our candidate again.

Yet Palin won a bunch of onlime polls with tens of thousands of votes and no mention in Politico (that I remember).

When the primary came here to Merryland only McQueeg and the Huckster were left on the ballot.

Who would you have voted for?

Not that many people were watching NY23 closely. That was when we really found out about Noot.

Huckabee doesn’t have the support - He only has support in name recognition only. In 2008 he was unknown nationally and had little money, today he is known and leads in straw polls and polling data but no one is still pouring money into his PAC, if people really liked him nation-wide then he at least be competitive in raising money

No mystery here. This is, after all, the Bible belt deep south. Baptist churches on every corner in South Carolina, and the Huck is a Baptist preacher.
