KSU's new race, gender department under scrutiny
Marietta Daily Journal ^ | March 29, 2011 | Jon Gillooly

The creation of a new department at Kennesaw State University that would house various racial, gender and environmental programs has come under fire from one longtime KSU professor who sees it as a hive for radical indoctrination.

In the next month or so, KSU Interim Provost Dr. Ken Harmon will determine whether to greenlight a new department within KSU's College of Humanities and Social Sciences called The Department of Cultural and Regional Studies. That department would have seven academic programs under its banner: African and African Diaspora Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, Environmental Studies, Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Peace Studies and American Studies.

"This is being put together by a bunch of activists," said Dr. Melvyn Fein, a tenured professor of sociology at KSU. "These folks do not have degrees in what they pretend to teach. To call it neo-Marxist is being very modest. These are activists who are going to use this to try and indoctrinate instead of teach."

But Arlethia Perry-Johnson, KSU's vice president for external affairs, said the seven programs that would make up the new department already exist at KSU, and the proposal is to simply consolidate them into one department. Bringing together professors who teach similar subject matter creates synergies and aides in communication, she said.

For example, at present, part of the Environmental Studies program is housed in KSU's College of Humanities and part of it is housed in KSU's College of Science and Mathematics, because students take courses offered by both colleges to shape their degree, based on whether their focus is more policy or science oriented, she said.

...

[Peace Studies professor] Pynn recently introduced KSU President Dan Papp at an event where he described "The Communist Manifesto" by Karl Marx as "a call to conscience."

If large portions of our universities were shut down, productivity would increase, since fewer students would be indoctrinated with socialist crap, and even gender studies professors can be taught to sweep floors.

Of course it’s being put together by a bunch of radicals.

And your money is paying for it.

So fork it over - April 15th is right around the corner. :)

Is there any department or course whose description ends with “Studies” that has any academic merit?

Will the department of “Vagina Monologues” be assimilated into this new department as well?

The entire education establishment from kindergarten on up is more about social indoctrination that it is about imparting knowledge.

Maybe this could be a good thing for conservatives.

From the Alinsky playbook, you have isolated and identified the loonies.

Next, the Department of Loony Studies becomes the target of ridicule from the kids in the engineering and ag departments.

Pretty soon, nobody can mention the Department of Loony Studies without rolling their eyes, and the number of Loony majors starts to trail off. And just think, none of the sensible professors in the other schools and departments will have to deal with the Loony professors coming to their staff meetings and Christmas parties.

Also, once they are all in the same department, you can reduce funding and facilities as a group, or move them to a dingy and remote part of campus. With any luck, the professors will take umbrage and will look for work at other universities. Do not replace them. Problem solved.

This constant incorrect and improper use of the word "gender" instead of the correct word in this context, "sex," is yet another example of the manipulation of language to push an agenda.

The word "gender" refers to language, not biological units. In Spanish, a tree, el arbol, (there should be a dash over the a) has a male gender. In Spanish, a breeze, una brisa, has a feminine gender. In Spanish, a person, una persona, has feminine gender EVEN WHEN IT IS A MAN. Un hombre es una persona, NOT "un persono."

Like the wind and like trees, words -- such as "person," don't have a sex, THEY HAVE A GENDER.

People, on the other hand, like nearly all fauna on earth, belong to one of two SEXES: they are either male or female. It is not their "gender," it is their SEX.

This substituion of the word "gender" is a subtle move to blur and minimize the true significance of the difference between male and female.

This new substitution of the word "gender" for "sex" didn't start happening until about the mid '80s, correct? It's as destructive and insidious as the use of the word "gay" to identify homosexuality.

If I were a hiring manager and one of these grads showed up with a resume listing one of these seven majors as his major, he would not be hired on the basis of demonstrating a history of poor judgement.

The whole idea is to provide jobs for Leftist academics who should be housed in loony bins instead.
Who’ll then provide easy A’s to students willing to rejurgitate their Leftist BS.

So these people get paid high five and six figure salaries to go imagine and create entire entire fields of study they can then “teach” (ie. attempt to impose) in whatever fashion pleases them. The only restriction on creating a new field of study is that you’ve got to first start with a liberal set of ultimate conclusions as first principles then construct a set of disiplines validating them. Since you’ve assumed your results you can never be wrong and there is absolutely no necessity there be any social ultility to the academic field you’ve created - only that it provide liberal politicians a sense of purpose and covenient rationalizations. For this they will fund you forever

I'm a little upset about this. I don't see a 'Caucasian African-American Orthodox Jew Studies Dept'. I should sue KSU! Why do they ignore us? Is it because we are a minority of a minority ... Or a majority minority. This is giving me a headache ...

Talk about a useless degree! African-American Diaspora Studies??? Seriously?

"...African and African Diaspora Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, Environmental Studies,...Peace Studies..."

Pray tell what kind of jobs graduates from these programs might be able obtain ...besides flipping burgers or bagging groceries?

Very well stated. Part of the problem IMO is that “sex” seems to be (or have become) a “dirty” word for many. Never mind that mild-mannered Charles Dickens used the word liberally and correctly.

I've been indulging myself with courses that interest me on iTunesU. I see none of the bias people speak about in the science courses. It's just those whacky humanities professors who are so insecure they must demand that the students understand how brilliant a mind the person at the front of the room has.
