(CNN) Former President George W. Bush is worried the U.S. might pull out of Afghanistan too early to the detriment of that country's women.
In an interview with Fox News that aired Thursday, Bush warned that Afghan women will "suffer" should the Obama administration decide to downscale troop levels there.
"My concern of course is that the United States gets weary of being in Afghanistan and says 'It's not worth it, let's leave' and Laura and I believe that if that were to happen, women would suffer again," he told Fox's Greta Van Susteren. "And we don't believe that's in the interest of the United States or the world to create a safe haven for terrorists and stand by and watch women's rights be abused."
"We liberated Afghanistan from the Taliban because of providing a save haven for al Qaeda," he continued. "But I believe then and believe now we have an obligation to help this young Democracy to survive and thrive."
Bush's comments came the same day he and former first lady Laura Bush kicked off a two-day conference at Southern Methodist University focusing on women's rights issues in Afghanistan an issue Mrs. Bush also championed when she was in the White House.
"Isolationism will end up subjecting certain people to horrors that I don't see how our country can live with that kind of decision," the former president also said.
The Obama administration has said that it will gradually hand off responsibilities to Afghanistan security forces as it draws down U.S. troops between this summer and the end of 2014.

Set the tone? Really? IOW, manipulate the news the same as lamestream media does, so no thinking is required. Got it.
Just my two cents here, but I think that if GWB had continued to be CIC after 2008, we would have made much better progress in Afghanistan by now, and we wouldn’t have seen the body count rise like it has under Zero.
Zero, like all Democrat presidents, is afraid to actually unleash the full might and fury of the US military, and is getting our people killed by nipping around the edges, and tying their hands behind their back with his suicidal rules of engagement.
I’m of the opinion that if we’re going to send good Americans into harm’s way, we need to let them achieve victory through whatever means are available to them.
“Former President George W. Bush is worried the U.S. might pull out of Afghanistan too early to the detriment of that country’s women.”
I hate to clue Dubya and laura in but Hamid Karzai does not let his own wife out of the house. His brother runs the drug trade there. Its totally corrupt. Women in Afghanistan have pretty well been screwed since the beginning of time and nothing short of executing all the men in the country and importing some guys from another country is going to fix it. These people live in a time warp and they like it that way. They don’t want to give up the dancing boys and the burkhas. Not gonna happen. We can’t fix every country. We need to leave.
You Paulitarians ARE leftists, with your anti-war, anti-military platform.
If you people don’t like a country with a strong military and strong presence in the world, then there are several others where you will feel much more comfortable.
Scab Ruttle, that was ugly. Go away.
For later.
Ditto
Who is Bush to say that American boys have to die and be wounded for some alleged benefit for Afgan women? If Afgan women are so important, let NOW and Emily’s List handle it.
Nonsense. At least they dropped the bomb. Where was the full aresnal of the US in Nangarhar province?
Nothing, I've lost too many friends that had to clear buildings when we could have taken out the entire town.
Go Army! :-}
We can't, and we shouldn't.
***I am surprised by the uncivil tone of some freepers here.***
Thank you for that. I thought for a moment that by some cosmic mistake I got onto DU.
And Bush will go down as a great president, while Zero will hopefully just go down.
To compare an adult who apparently has been studying and discussing the issues involved with the people most affected for some time to a mere child is absurd.
I agree. I saw Laura Bush on Greta last night, and their efforts to help the women in Afghanistan are noble. Of course the women in Africa and Central America, etc., etc. need help too. But Afghanistan is brutal towards them. But doesn’t Afghanistan have a lot of untapped oil?
That said, W’s abject failure on borders and immigration is inexcusable.
You're talking about Democrats like Harry Truman. They don't exist anymore. They're all Republicans, now.
That is not just 2 cents worth...that is fact.
Don’t let them get to you. You’re right.
Good post. Likewise, if he thinks “we have an obligation to help this young Democracy to survive and thrive”, he’s going to have to point me towards an example of a thriving Democracy in any muslim country. It is fundamentally incompatible with their religion. And so are we.
