CA: Teachers union calling for tax hike on top 1 percent of earners
Sac Bee Capitol Alert ^ | 3/31/11 | Kevin Yamamura

As Democrats scramble to find a new budget course after talks collapsed this week, the California Federation of Teachers is calling for a 1 percent tax hike on the top 1 percent of earners as part of a state budget solution.

The union estimates the tax hike would raise an estimated $2.5 billion as the state faces a remaining $15.4 billion deficit, said spokesman Steve Hopcraft. The proposal would hike taxes by 1 percent on personal income above $500,000. CFT represents 120,000 teachers and school employees at all levels, including the University of California.

To back its efforts, CFT commissioned research by private pollster Ben Tulchin which shows 78 percent of voters strongly or somewhat support such an income tax hike. Respondents were asked whether they would back that idea "in order to balance the budget and prevent deeper cuts to services."

It's highly unlikely such a proposal would gain the necessary two-thirds vote of the Legislature, as Republicans and leading business groups have opposed targeted tax hikes. But Democrats could attempt to place it on a future ballot with a majority vote or labor unions could gather signatures for an initiative.

Teachers calling for a tax hike for the 1% of top
wage earners is no different than me calling for
a tax hike just on teachers.

It’s wrong, it’s unAmerican.

One percent tax hike for every teacher, that will solve budget problem.

I would guess the top 1% are already paying 40% of all income taxes in California...

California should fire the bottom 5% of teachers every year.

If we simply had a little law that said you only got to vote....if you paid taxes....then we could toss out thirty percent of the voters in America and start to make things interesting.

The proposal would hike taxes by 1 percent on personal income above $500,000.

Ha...That would affect:

1. CA Education supervisors and other bureaucrats

2. Union prison guards

3. DMV administrators

4. SEIU union chiefs

5. Fire department chiefs

6. Most of San Francisco city administration

7. The committee chairmen of over 200 CA boards

What could be better...?

Cut all teachers pay by 25%!

Theow all government retirement plans into Soccial Security.

Eliminate 75% of all government agencies and fire their employees.

Make government worker unions illegal.

Hey top 1% of CA earners:

If you are liberal: Texas sucks. It’s too hot. Everything is poisonous. It’s infested with gun-totting racist knuckle-dragging gay-hating rednecks. They hunt liberals for sport. Stay away. You’d HATE it here.

OK, libs, you can stop reading now.

Still here? Ok, you’re a conservative. The truth is it’s too hot for about 3 weeks in summer, which is about how long the bad part of winter lasts. Everything poisonous is easily avoided. It’s infested with gun-totting patriots. Outside of the lib-infested urban areas, crime is low thanks not a little to those gun-totting patriots. We don’t hunt liberals for sport, we just joke about it because it makes liberals wet their pants. To the women: men still hold doors for you, say ma’am, and treat you like a lady. To the men: as many smoking hot women as Hollywood with a tenth the crazy. (I’ve live in both LA and Dallas. Trust me.) And most importantly, No State Income Tax! Move on down! You’ll love it here!

I believe they mean one percentage point. That's going from 8 to 9 percent rather than 8 to 8.08 percent. The California numbers may be different from my example.

Stock in moving companies will go up. That 1%
will be happy to move to a friendlier place...and
they have the means to do so.

A tax on government employees would be a great idea.

If the top 1% leave, there is always the next top 1%, and the next etc.

Just like liberal statistics “The poorest 10% are blah blah blah”

There is always going to be a “top 1%” even if that number is down to minimum wage employees and there is always a “bottom 10%” even when they XBoxes, Nike’s and big screen TV’s.

Milking your cows four times a day, up from two times a day does not get you more milk. The cows dry up and give less. The same goes for tax raising. Only spending less solves a money shortage crisis.

They will only take their money, businesses and spending elsewhere...small businessmen primarily. Or, close.

Really friggin' dumb idea. The cost to the state would, within a single year, far exceed the revenue they hope to raise.
