If they said they had one or perhaps two I would be more concerned. But 160, come on. China is only estimated to have between 180 warheads in service. Pakistan has built no more than 110 given the amount of material they started off with. And there aren't more than 90 still in service.

160 nuclear bombs is ridiculous. 160 dirty bombs is NOT.

I give you the hysteria over Fukushima "fallout" levels on the west coast.

People hear "elevated levels" and go nuts.

Talk is cheap - that is why they are doing it.

I still think it is a baseless threat for the reasons you outline. However this thread was talking about fission devices, and I think those (even one) are really unlikely for AQ. Way beyond their capabilities. Dirty bombs are their speed, and having multiple dirty bombs is credible, and should be taken as a real possibility.

During the Cold War the Russkies cached nukes in a number of Western countries for use by Spetznaz. They even smuggled nukes into CONUS.

I've heard that claim before. Do you think there is any truth to it? You can't just put a nuke in a farm shed in 1983 and leave it until 2011. Assuming they exist at all, either the Soviets recovered them, the US discovered them or someone is successfully mantaining them right under our noses. I just can't bring myself to believe in that last option, or the option I didn't even mention: that they were abandoned. They are just to valuable and politically dangerous to simply walk away from.

I don’t recall any warnings prior to 9/11 and that killed more people than any other suicide bombing attack in the world. I concur with a previous poster who stated that if they had such a capability, they would simply exercise it: why risk detection/failure by alerting U.S. authorities?

Absent some very discrete demands of a sizable nature (i.e., “get out of Iraq” as opposed to “release those 3 Al Quaeda prisoners from Gitmo”), it would be pointless to give your enemy even the slightest strategic advantage with free advertising.

Conversely, if they DIDN’T have such a capability, they might hope to precipitate a panic by intimating they had it etc.
