EU to ban cars from cities by 2050
Telegraph ^ | 3/28/2011 | Bruno Waterfield

Cars will be banned from London and all other cities across Europe under a draconian EU masterplan to cut CO2 emissions by 60 per cent over the next 40 years.

Top of the EU's list to cut climate change emissions is a target of 'zero' for the number of petrol and diesel-driven cars and lorries in the EU's future cities.

The European Commission on Monday unveiled a "single European transport area" aimed at enforcing "a profound shift in transport patterns for passengers" by 2050.

The plan also envisages an end to cheap holiday flights from Britain to southern Europe with a target that over 50 per cent of all journeys above 186 miles should be by rail.

Top of the EU's list to cut climate change emissions is a target of "zero" for the number of petrol and diesel-driven cars and lorries in the EU's future cities.

Siim Kallas, the EU transport commission, insisted that Brussels directives and new taxation of fuel would be used to force people out of their cars and onto "alternative" means of transport.

"That means no more conventionally fuelled cars in our city centres," he said. "Action will follow, legislation, real action to change behaviour."

The Association of British Drivers rejected the proposal to ban cars as economically disastrous and as a "crazy" restriction on mobility.

"I suggest that he goes and finds himself a space in the local mental asylum," said Hugh Bladon, a spokesman for the BDA.

All motorized vehicles excepting government troop carriers and tanks!

This is what socialists do when they are given power. They put ideas before people. They view people as nothing more then clay to be molded as they see fit. This is another attempt to just control more of people lives and have them even more dependent on government. I hope people wake up some day.

CO2 = People.

That's what they really want to ban.

No fossil-fueled vehicles. They have 40 years to come up with a different fuel source, which is a lot of time.

So, back to horses and mules and such?

How much crap will pour out of tens of thousands of horses in old london> Not to mention the sillions of gallons of urine.

That’ll be pleasant, and really promote commerce and transportation.

Fixed it.

All that blood we shed in the 20th century and the Europeans essentially turn to fascism of their own free will.

The EU members must remember that it’s difficult to put the poop back into the pony once it has hit the bricks.

Sounds like it’s right out of C.S. Lewis’ science fiction triology.

I think a big problem isn’t that utopians are stupid, they aren’t. The problem is they hate people.

In Milan the govt dramatically raised taxes on cars in town. Quite frankly it is now very nice. They have the infrastructure to support restrictions on cars though. Good rail,bus,....

"I hope people wake up some day. "

Since time immemorial Europeans have been under the heel of one sort of totalitarian regime or another. It seems to be in their blood. They are a decadent, weak people, easily cowed into subservience. They have nearly uniformly given up their inalienable rights and accepted, instead, what their governments choose to dole out to them. Those who seek to be more have historically gone elsewhere, far from Europe.

There is almost no greatness left in Europe. Without our leadership on the world stage they would already have fallen much farther into degradation. Every day brings more evidence that they continue to weaken and sink deeper into their collective holes. I do not expect much from Europe or Europeans ever again.

Meanwhile, China grows stronger every day. A shadow looms in the east.

We have a family friend in the UK, he blamed Europe's downfall on WW I. He said that it took the cream of the crop when it came to European Males, and that most of the countries (England, especially, per this guy) just never recovered.

Makes as much sense as anything, I guess. I'd have blamed immigration.
