I have a German friend who’s quite upset about this.
As he grew into an adolescent, animal welfare grouped worried all the attention was causing him to behave abnormally.
He would sway to and fro, and imitate fans taking photos by lifting a paw to his face.
His enclosure at the zoo is now a shrine to his memory. He will be stuffed and put on display in a museum.

That was my first thought. His mother rejected him - for a reason. And why is that sad? It is the way of things.
Men are too prone to anthropomorphism, IMO.
