The number of African Americans residing in the District plummeted by more than 11 percent during the past decade, with blacks on the verge of losing their majority status in the city for the first time in half a century.
According to census statistics released Thursday, barely 50 percent of the Districts population was African American in 2010 a remarkable shift in a place once nicknamed Chocolate City.
The black population dropped by more than 39,000 over the decade, down to 301,000 of the citys 601,700 residents. At the same time, the non-Hispanic white population skyrocketed by more than 50,000 to 209,000 residents, almost a third higher than a decade earlier.
The census statistics showed a steeper change for both blacks and whites than had been estimated. With the city s black population dropping by about 1 percent a year, African Americans might already be below the 50 percent mark in the city.
In a city that prides itself on being a hub of black culture and politics, a majority of residents have been black since whites began moving to the suburbs en masse at the end of World War II. By 1970, seven out of 10 Washingtonians were black.
The loss of blacks comes at a time when the city is experiencing a rebound, reversing a 60-year-long slide in population and adding almost 20,000 new residents between 2000 and 2010.
The demographic change is the result of almost 15 years of gentrification that has transformed large swaths of Washington, especially downtown. As housing prices soared, white professionals priced out of neighborhoods such as Dupont Circle began migrating to predominantly black areas such as Petworth and Brookland.

The migration was just up Pennsylvania Avenue Extended into Prince Georges County, MD. Interestingly, SF also had a huge drop in its black population as yuppies moved into the city.
I think they are moving to Panama City Beach.
Interesting point. The influx of new residents is causing improvements and economic prosperity in some of these neighborhoods. But it’s “politically incorrect” to talk about such things. So instead, they are lamenting that the black majority in Washington, DC, is eroding, and that somehow that marks the end of a golden age or something.
Refugees from the ultra-corrupt democrat party and its Teachers Union.
An important comment made about the continuation of the article is a failure to mention the big increase in Hispanic residents as well as more Asians. On recent trips downtown, I hardly recognized the place it has become so lively at night, especially along lower 7th Street.
Did they all kill eachother?
This has been happening across the nation for at least the last 30-odd years. Blacks have been decentralizing from their old communities for at least that long.
In another twenty years, there won’t be any such thing as a homogeneous ‘black’ community anymore. Hopefully, that’ll be a good thing.
ya nitwits!
We’re talking about DC here. Nothing good can come from an economic boom in a city of shysters when the rest of the country rots. Whatever good fortunes come to DC come at the expense of the rest of us.
The steady growth of government in DC in the Clinton/Bush/Obama years is nothing good for the US. The poor being priced out of DC is the least of our worries.
Wow.
Maybe I can finally go back to visit the Smithsonian and Georgetown.
I’ve never heard it called “Chocolate City”.
It’s always been Dodge City because of the likelihood of getting shot.
I’ve heard New Orleans called ‘Chocolate City’, by ex-mayor Nagin. As the numbers of lower middle class blacks become upper middle class they don’t have to stay in the city with its violence and follow the whites to the inner suburbs, like Prince George County Maryland and DeKalb County Georgia, while upper class whites move to gentrified inner city neighborhoods.
Oakland, CA and Detroit, MI have had major plummets, as well.
I do believe the high abortion rate has at least something to do with it.
I wouldn’t move to DC at gunpoint.
We took the bikes down there on a day trip years ago and it was nerve-wracking.
Every time you parked, you didn’t know if your bike would still be there when you came back.
It sucks because the Smithsonian and Commander Salamander in Georgetown are two of my favorite tourist traps.
“Did they all kill each other?”
To some degree, yes (see my abortion comment above).
There was a black pastor who peacefully stood in front of the abortion clinics in a black neighborhood in Oakland. He had an inoffensive sign, offering help or some such, or else he had inoffensive handouts, offering help.
Apparently he was in the ‘bubble zone,” unrepentant over it, and did several weeks in jail for it.
Hey, AG Holder, THAT’S a man who is standing up for “his people.”
Sadly there are too few of him.
Sort of, rental housing is being held off the market or converted and additional costs of the city have driven blacks out, but one of the largest reasons is the convenience of BART transit for the commuter criminal drug dealers, burglars, and strong arm robbers.
SF enforcement, and prosecution is so bad, plus it's excellent free public defender, that they can make piles more money commuting from Oakland.
It's because the same idiots keep electing this idiot to government positions. I CAN'T believe he's still around.
