Gadhafi's Warplane Shot Down
ABC ^ | March 24, 2011 | MARTHA RADDATZ, LUIS MARTINEZ AND ALEXANDER MARQUARDT

Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi challenged the allies' no-fly zone for the first time today, sending up a warplane over the city of Misrata where it was quickly shot down by French fighter jets, a senior French military official said.

The plane launched by Gadhafi was a "galeb," a single-engine military aircraft.

Africa Command's Gen. Carter F. Ham told ABC News Gadhafi's forces are advancing in the northwest city of Misrata, with his men dressing as civilians. Ham said there are still plenty of command and control centers left for the allied forces to target.

Gadhafi is aware there will be a transfer of power from the United States in the coming days, Ham said, and the embattled leader seems to think he will wait it out until the United States no longer has command.

Gadhafi's Bab Al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli was struck again by coalition forces overnight for a second time. The compound was originally hit on Sunday by two British tomahawk missiles.

The latest strike on the Al-Aziziya compound was not a pre-scheduled target, a U.S. official said. Instead, it was more likely an opportune target, in that the pilots did not go out intending to target the compound, but may have seen something worth attacking, the official said.

The pilot deserves a posthumous medal. No way I’d agree to go up in a 440 knot, 50 year old aircraft in that environment.

They're welcome to it.

Qaddafy is going to win this “war”, IMO. You can’t really count on the French for anything much more than perfume.

They showed him a family photo first. (His family was tied up and had a couple Klashnikovs pointed at them)

It was on a humanitarian mission to deliver baby formula as yesterday the US bombed the baby formula factory, with the babies in it.

Obviously Gadhafi's intelligence agency is still up and working.

Oh wait! I forgot. President Obama publically announced that we'd be leaving soon so that his poll numbers would not continue to drop so fast.

Most likely Obama's decicion to get involved with Libya was also to keep his poll numbers from dropping so fast.

Democrats will kill is they think their poll numbers will go up.

***The French are definitely taking the operational lead.****

If the FRENCH had allowed Reagan to fly our f-111s over French air space, instead of going around Spain, they would not have to be doing this right now.

I’m wondering how they got that guy to head up there.

Do the French have a plan for the ground war? It seems that they will need it at some point.

Anyone else remember that MASH episode with an inept North Korean pilot known as “5 O’Clock Charlie”?

Sounds like he moved to Libya.
