...black smoke was seen rising at the No. 3 reactor building...surface temperatures...have topped the maximum levels...high-level radiation amounting to at least 500 millisieverts per hour was detected...

It is one of the situations. If you’ve read the post about tests that were conducted on spent fuel rods, you won’t be concerned.
At the plant pictured, an auxiliary building was built around the lower part of the containment. You can see the work on the lower elevations. That is also a seismic rated structure. That is the location of the spent fuel pool in that layout which is a late model BWR design.
What engine and what bird if I can ask?
I'm running an O-360 Lycomming.
with only one “m”, btw.
The headline sums it up nicely. Radiation fears spread to Tokyo.
Further, "workers had to leave the plant again"... Why did thy leave? Radiation levels maybe? This means they monitor and as well take precautions e.g. time distance and shielding...
Where did these workers go -Tibet? No, they probably are on standby nearby awaiting an opportunity to reenter AGAIN...
Nuke workers probably know more about dangers involved in nuke than reporters do.
Nuke workers probably know more about journalism than reporters do.
Except the problem is that humans are curious, and would look towards a source of light.
Isn’t low level radiation hormesis a hypothesis very much similar to global warming?
The burned-in shadows are the surface's original color, protected from the atomic flash, leaving a darker or lighter color emblazoned around the figures.
Note, from a relatively small atomic device compared with today's hydrogen bombs.
In a recent reply someone noted, rightly so, that, "This is a good opportunity to get the truth out". Free Republic is a wonderful source of truth. There are so many well informed folks here.....so many to give input on just about anything......
Overall, I believe the various threads about the Japanese nuke plants have helped, not hurt, Freepers and Lurkers. The discussions have been helpful to me, and, I am sure, to others........
We may not all agree on various subjects, but, I cannot think of a better place to disagree..........I gotta run for now, Laters.........

The truth has no agenda! :)
Does that work with lightning too?
Sixteen years ago—before I heard of Ann Coulter or Free Republic—I was told that studies had shown that long term exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation was actually beneficial to your health.
Now what dumb ass told me that? Oh yeah, a few instructors at Naval Nuclear Power School. But what the hell do those morons know?
(But then they said regardless of those studies, we were to minimize our exposure as far as practicable.)
Yes, the speed of sound. Of course, it’s only thunder in the case of lightning.
You start by designing the pressure vessel and safety systems for a worst case senario, i.e., not to blow up during a core re-wet after a LOCA.
If all else fails you bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.
If they used concrete wouldn’t they have to get under the rods? In a meltdown, concrete wouldn’t hold a steam explosion any better than what they have now. Right? Am I missing something?
What’s a food grade weld?
Liar. http://home.hiwaay.net/~slone/ishadow.html
Thanks for the tip derllak
I'm not sure if it's generated or enhanced, but it is a good representation as you will discover if you google "Nagasaki shadows (warning gruesome images)"
It's also a famous image.
Thanks,
How far out could flash burns occur?
