It’s definitely a distraction.
In 1996 this type of thing brought us Bob Dole.
In 2000 it brought us George Bush.
In 2008 it brought us John McCain.
In 2012 it’s almost certain to bring us some block-head that would have been very comfortable as a 1980s Democrat.
