It doesn't get more locavore than this. Ice cream made from human breast milk. Or what about mom's milk cheese?
It's the most natural of foods and yet, human breast milk is lumped in with bizarre and controversial foods, unless, of course, it's a suckling baby drinking it.
The latest human breast milk product is Baby Gaga ice cream, sold in London, England, in a shop called The Icecreamists. The restaurant buys milk from mamas to make into ice cream flavoured with vanilla and lemon zest that it serves in a martini glass for about $22.50.
"The Baby Gaga tastes creamy and rich. No one's done anything interesting with ice cream in the last 100 years," owner Matt O'Connor has said.
Is it the thin edge of a trend? It isn't the first human milk product to be sold to the public. Klee Brasserie, a fine dining restaurant in New York City, made limited amounts of breast milk cheese dishes while the owner's wife was lactating last year. The chef/owner served the cheese dredged in porcini powder; with figs and Hungarian pepper; and with maple caramelized pumpkin seeds and grapes.
The New York City health department didn't have specific rules on human breast milk products but they did ask the owner to stop selling or giving away the dishes. Co-owner Daniel Angerer said he got extreme reactions, both positive and negative.
Another New Yorker, Miriam Simun, made and served up breast milk cheeses as a university project. And here in Canada, a Toronto performance artist staged a piece called Lactation Station Breast Milk Bar with samples. The idea has backing from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). They've even urged Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream company to start replacing cow's milk with human breast milk.

"MMM...this one tastes like Hepatitis B!"
Don’t be critical of things you have never tried and are perfectly aligned with nature.
Lemme guess, the ice cream will next be served at Hooters.
ditto. And none of that mass -corporate farmed stuff.
“I dont know why it bothers me, but it does.”
Perhaps because it’s a perversion regarding the innocence of the state of motherhood and the exploitation of it for the masses.
Milk meant to nuture a baby instead is hawked to adults who have become bored thrill seekers imagining themselves very avante garde.
An industry that would reduce women to cows.
bothers me because it takes what should be private and makes it public for profit. Socialism knows no bounds.
Exactly! I did try the extra sharp cheese they started selling here in my city. Tasted kind of watered down compared to the normal cheese I get.
Ping

Don’t mean to piss in the soup, but would that apply to organ donations? Just ask’n.
“On Tap”?

That’s why it’s better to stay close to home!
No way... won’t consume this stuff.
Dairy farmers might learn to like it, if for no other reason, they will no longer have to hire anyone to clean out the barn.... the ladies can do it themselves.
Sorry ladies... I can’t help myself.
You figure it out smartass.
I love breasts, and I love milk. But for some reason the idea of ‘breast milk ice cream’ (or breast milk anything) grosses me out.
