Detroit's population plummeted 25 percent over the past decade amid an economic downturn so severe that Michigan was the only state that failed to gain residents, according to 2010 Census data released Tuesday.

The statistics show that the once-mighty Motor City's population dropped to 713,777 last year, from 951,270 in 2000...

Detroit's population peaked at 1.8 million in 1950, when it ranked fifth nationally.

Thow some money at it. Raise taxes around the state to fund some green jobs using Detroit brown fields. Then shutter the businesses with the green jobs once the money is gone. Ban the sale of any car not made by General Motors or Chrysler.

There! Problem solved.

I still have a hard time grasping that these people reelected Granholm. But I also still have a hard time grasping that we elected obama.

All of these are huge factors, but there’s more to it than just poor governance. I think a big part of the decline of these old “Rust Belt” cities is that a location on the Great Lakes system is no longer as important as it used to be for industrial activity. Access to ports on the East and West Coasts, along with access to major Class I railroads, have become bigger factors in industrial site selection over the last few decades.

I think access to reasonably priced labor may have had a bit to do with it, but I agree with all your observations.

In this era of declining housing values, this population decrease must be an added [declining] boost.

I’m well aware of that but it still does not change the fact that you all reelected her. I have relatives in Michigan and they were shocked and dumbfounded when Granholm was reelected. Kind of like I was when obama was elected. Btw did she blow you away? About as much as oboma did me no doubt. And obama put her on his economic transition team. Go figure.

It would be interesting to see which cities are now larger than Detroit (e.g., a little above 714,000 in population).
