Arab League condemns broad bombing campaign in Libya
The Washington Post ^ | 20 March 2011 | Edward Cody

Posted on 03/20/2011 11:51:14 AM PDT by Racehorse

The Arab League secretary general, Amr Moussa, deplored the broad scope of the U.S.-European bombing campaign in Libya on Sunday and said he would call a new league meeting to reconsider Arab approval of the Western military intervention.

Moussa said the Arab League’s approval of a no-fly zone on March 12 was based on a desire to prevent Moammar Gaddafi’s air force from attacking civilians and was not designed to embrace the intense bombing and missile attacks—including on Tripoli, the capital, and on Libyan ground forces—that have filled Arab television screens for the last two days.

“What is happening in Libya differs from the aim of imposing a no-fly zone,” he said in a statement on the official Middle East News Agency. “And what we want is the protection of civilians and not the shelling of more civilians.”

Moussa’s declaration suggested some of the 22 Arab League members were taken aback by what they have seen and wanted to modify their approval lest they be perceived as accepting outright Western military intervention in Libya. Although the eccentric Gaddafi is widely looked down on in the Arab world, Middle Eastern leaders and their peoples traditionally have risen up in emotional protest at the first sign of Western intervention.

A shift away from the Arab League endorsement, even partial, would constitute an important setback to the U.S.-European campaign. Western leaders brandished the Arab League decision as a justification for their decision to move militarily and as a weapon in the debate to obtain a U.N. Security Council resolution two days before the bombing began.

As U.S. and European military operations entered their second day, however, most Arab governments maintained public silence . . .

Many of these “democracy” movements are insurgents wanting to substitute their own brand of tyranny for the one that exists or tribal and religious rivalies. You are right that the US has to have a direct national interest before they lend support to one of these “democracy” movements in this teeming trashpile of humanity called the Middle East. The only “democracy” movement the US should lend its support to is the one to overthrow the mullahs in Iran. We have a direct national interest in seeing the mullahs go and we should be doing all witnin our power to covertly advance and support opposition to the mullahs.

You've made some good points — especially about the fleeting alliances. I was referring to the war between civilizations; in particular, the 1,300 year long battle to establish a world caliphate. If that isn't steadfast, nothing is. By comparison, westerners (particularly N. Americans) are almost completely ahistorical. Our attention span barely exceeds the cable TV news cycle. Q’Daffy probably figures his best chance is to simply buy time — recent history shows that the ‘west’ soon sours on military (mis)adventures.

Make that “Brilliant”. It would have made for a great chapter in future history books.

“4. Authorizes Member States that have notified the Secretary-General, acting nationally or through regional organizations or arrangements, and acting in cooperation with the Secretary-General, to take all necessary measures, notwithstanding paragraph 9 of resolution 1970 (2011), to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, including Benghazi, while excluding a foreign occupation force of any form on any part of Libyan territory, and requests the Member States concerned to inform the Secretary-General immediately of the measures they take pursuant to the authorization conferred by this paragraph which shall be immediately reported to the Security Council;”

Looks like the UN gave carte blanche to obama, and he can target anything he wishes under the guise of protecting civilians.

The Great Satan does the bidding of muslims. Why is it that we have to fight THEIR wars? Don’t they have enough camels and rocks to fight their own battles?

The White House and State Department misinterpreted the Arabs’ “No Fly Zone” communique. They wanted UN public health teams to eradicate maggots and flies from Libya.

How much of this is for the consumption of their people?

Consumption by the people? The Arab and Muslim Street now believes that the Crusaders are attacking another Muslim country.

You wanted a nice sanitary armed intervention?
How many interventions has the Arab League accomplished with zero civilian casualties?

How could you tell the civilians if all the sandmaggots wear civilian dresses?

You've been in FR ten years and haven't figured out that a "tiny minority" of 20% of 1.4 billion muslims IS 280,000,000 IRRATIONAL KILLERS?

And you think that having a public discussion about how many of those are in the US is a "shoddy affair?"
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're either senile, or just arrived from another planet.

Funny you should say that. It's not the first time...

America as muslim's servant. Clinton had his bosnian debacle, and then there is this...
Saudi Arabia’s Slaves...

"I summon my blue-eyed slaves anytime it pleases me. I command the Americans to send me their bravest soldiers to die for me. Anytime I clap my hands a stupid genie called the American ambassador appears to do my bidding. When the Americans die in my service their bodies are frozen in metal boxes by the US Embassy and American airplanes carry them away, as if they never existed. Truly, America is my favorite slave." --- King Fahd Bin Abdul-Aziz, Jeddeh 1993

This should be sent to obama. Oh, what was I thinking. He already knows this.

Sorry, KeyLargo.

Though I do not believe you are senile nor an extraterestial visitor, Publius6961's reply was so succintly right on target I had to stand up and give him/her a salute of respect . . . and, a cheerful toast with what was left in my coffee mug after reading his/her post. The rest of my coffee was spread all over my desk . . . just missed drenching my keyboard.

I do not know how my post was changed by removing my last sentence. As you see I included my opinion that King was correct in his hearings.

This is exactly what I posted on numerous threads:

I rarely agree with this view of the U.S., but now I do in the case of the U.S. beginning a third war in the Middle East and the disaster that will follow. However, I do not agree though that Rep. King’s congressional hearings are a ‘witchhunt’ since he is trying to protect us here in the U.S.

Libya: Another quagmire beckons.

In the short space of a decade, the U.S. has made war in three Muslim nations, and Canada in two. For many Muslims, any just cause for these conflicts is beside the point. Shoddy affairs like Rep. Peter King (R-NY)’s congressional witchhunt on Muslims are easily enough overlooked in Karachi and Jakarta. But Western military attacks on sovereign Muslim nations can’t help but appear to many of the world’s estimated 1.2 billion to 1.6 billion Muslims - or about 20% of the world population - as a determined assault on the Muslim world.
