Obama Finally Has His Own War
SPIEGEL ^ | 03/19/2011 | Marc Pitzke

Posted on 03/19/2011 8:02:27 PM PDT by george76

Following the UN resolution on Thursday night that paved the way for military strikes against Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, Obama had been silent for 20 hours. While the French and British were making preparations for military action, and the Germans pondered the wisdom of their abstention, the White House preferred to wait.

That was partly because no one in Washington really knows what to make of Gadhafi's recent maneuvering. But mainly it is because Obama finds himself trapped in a dilemma: He must explain to his people why he gone from being a staunch opponent of US military action to its advocate. It would be the third current American military operation in a Muslim country, after Afghanistan and Iraq.

Some American commentators have already begun referring to the Korean War. That war, which traumatized generations of Americans, began in a similar fashion in 1950, with a UN resolution and an offer of help from the West.

From peace to war in seven days: It is enough to give people "whiplash," complained Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson on the TV channel MSNBC.

...

Obama is "going on vacation," mocked host Steve Doocy on the conservative Fox News network. "He's going to Rio. You've got to be kidding. He's taking his family."

Last time he launched cruise missiles (December 09) he was out of the country collecting his peace prize.

Meanwhile American’s are asking what the hell is he doing.

The real story: Obamalini is desperately trying to wag the dog.

There are no “good guys” in the Libyan struggle, and we don’t have any national interest there that is worth the expenditure of a dollar, let alone an American life. This is going to backfire on Dear Leader. But then, again, stupid is as stupid does.

Obamalini’s action is going to intensify terrorism here and abroad. Just watch.

France depends upon the light crude oil that comes from that region. They instigated this. Obama followed.

It’s not “war” unless Congress declares it as such. So without a declaration of war at best we are engaged in a “law enforcement” or “humanitarian intervention” which always comes with ridiculous rules of engagement designed to prohibit American soldiers from firing upon anyone unless they first obtain 34 authorizations in writing and notarized. Check and see when was the last time Congress actually declared war on anything. The answer might surprise you.

I fail to see why they need our help at all. Both Britain and France have carriers and inflight fueling capabilities. I’m assuming they also have cruise missiles. (those are costing us some big bucks)

As far as the arab league is concerned, its time to take the training wheels off their jets and use the damn things.

[we don’t have any national interest there that is worth the expenditure of a dollar]

Well, you can make arguments on both sides. But what is clear is that if you are going to act, you can’t dither around for a week or two while the rebels you plan to support are decimated.

I hope you are kidding. We will have to put people on the ground to rebuild the stuff we are blowing up now. It won’t be cheap either.

That is the American way now. We could blow up a tent and feel compelled to replace it with a 5 star resort.
