BENGHAZI, Libya -- A plane has been shot down over the main rebel-held city in eastern Libya.

An Associated Press reporter saw the plane go down in flames outside Benghazi early Saturday after the area came under shelling.

A black cloud went up over the city's southern outskirts.

Muammar Qaddafi's government declared a cease-fire Friday in an attempt to outmaneuver Western military intervention. But the opposition has been saying shells rained down well after the announcement and accused the Libyan leader of lying.

“Initial reports indicate the Libyan leader Gaddafi has violated UN resolution 1973, which was passed on Thursday night. However, our reporter says he was at the hospital mortuary when the body of the jet pilot was brought in. He was told that the pilot was one of the Libyan rebels. Later reports confirm the plane belonged to the rebels and was shot down by Colonel Gaddafi’s forces. (Sources: twitter, BBC, The Guardian).”

doesn’t history show it has always been rats that get us into wars on foreign soil?

Mostly, but not always. Gulf War I.

Who are the rebels?

The fact that anyone has to ask that question is a compelling reason why America has no business getting involved in this Civil War.

The fact of the matter is that our own Ship of State is rudderless in this storm and our Captain is a blubbering idiot. If anybody on this planet needs to be in rebellion it is us. God help us through the next two years

It`ll be interesting to see Colonel-General Obama`s tactics for switching to Plan B (ground troops) if Plan A fails to halt Gaddafi`s army in its tracks.

I've been wondering that, too. I can't imagine that it'll take long, either. I know many conservatives believe, with good reason, that Obama isn't as clueless as some claim. With this Libya situation, though, he's so far over his head.

Footage was shown of them repainting the Hinds in rebel markings.

Somehow I get the feeling they did not recompute the weight & balance after putting on a few pounds of fresh paint. May not bite them on a Hind, but they might be surprised if they try that on some of the aircraft.

Reverend Wright and Louis Farrakan consider Gaddafi a friend. They have both been over to see Gaddafi. Obama is friends with both of these bozos. Obama is doing exactly what they want - Nothing, leave Gaddafi, in power. He spoke out against Mubarak because Egypt is friendly to America. So Mubarak had to go.

Obama likes anyone against the USA.

http://punditpress.blogspot.com/2011/02/maummar-gaddafi-tied-to-rev-jeremiah.html

It all goes back to 1984, when Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and Rev. Wright decided to take a trip to Libya and see Gaddafi in Tripoli, the capital of Libya. Was it to condemn Gaddafi at the height of his reign? Was to to ask Gaddafi to work with the United States, as the two countries were in an extremely icy relationship? No.

It was a social visit.

And even worse, at the time and since, the good reverend knew that this could have political consequences, especially during the Presidential campaign in 2008. To quote Wright in 2008:

“When [Obama’s] enemies find out that in 1984 I went to Tripoli to visit [Gaddafi] with Farrakhan, a lot of his Jewish support will dry up quicker than a snowball in hell.”
The ties between Farrakhan and Gaddafi are numerous, but surely President Obama has known about his reverend’s indiscretion for years now. Is this why he has kept quiet until today? Maybe.

There has been no use of the U. S. War Powers Act since 1976. How about asking Congress for a Declaration of War???I though we were a Nation of laws!!!

My sentiments exactly. That is why the Secdef, Joint chiefs and anyone with an ounce of military study did not want to touch this with a ten foot pole.

will we bomb them?

Most likely but by accident. "Innocent" casualties can never be 100% avoidable in war. Unfortunately, this could be one thing that could cause us great trouble and embarrassment. Not only would we be bombing innocents but also Gadaffi's opposition.

Could become ugly but at the very least embarrassing.

I would rejoice when Daffy Duck is killed or captured. But it is interesting that Obama just involved us in a third Middle East War and did not make more than a brief statement form Brazil...

The media isn’t reporting whose plane it was.

Maybe someone should tell the “rebels” that there are French Planes overhead.

Its odd that in the video that you couldn’t see a missile trail or explosions of AA artillery or tracer fire. I suspect that this jet may have just lost it engine when it went down. It looks like a video I’ve seen of an F-14 about to go supersonic when one of its engines had a catistrophic failure.
